Mavs dominate Cardinals in weekend-opener

Four CMU players go 2-0 in 5-0 victory

KEARNEY, Neb.— Julianna Campos, Delia Maier, Devyn Rodriguez and Kristen Thomas all went 2-0 to lead the Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team to a dominating 5-0 win over William Jewell College in neutral-site action here at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center on Thursday evening.

Those four all won their singles matches in straight sets after they and the Mavericks had swept the three doubles matches while allowing just three games to the Cardinals, who fell to 3-4 on the season.

CMU won for the second straight time in a span of five days of the young spring season and improved to 4-2 overall and to 3-1 against NCAA Division II opposition during the 2023-24 campaign, which will continue with three more matches on Friday and Saturday.

In Thursday's doubles action, Maier and Thomas blanked Molly McBratney and Chloe McDonnell, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles before Issy Coman and Makenna Livingston scored a 6-1 win in the top flight over the Cardinals' Julia Rabiej and Julia Santos.

Campos and Rodriguez then completed the doubles sweep with a 6-2 win on Court 2, giving the Mavs the early 1-0 team advantage.

After the men's singles matches between the two institutions, the Maverick women then went to work in singles.

Maier and Campos both blanked their opponents by 6-0, 6-0 margins at No. 4 and 6 singles, respectively, before Rodriguez clinched the dual with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Santos at No. 3 singles, moments before Thomas finished off McBratney, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5.

The other two singles matches were left unfinished and were quite tight.  Livingston won the first set of her No. 2 singles match by a 7-5 margin over Gwyn Gifford but was down 5-4 in the second set.

Meanwhile, Coman dropped the opening set to Rabiej by a 7-5 score but was leading the German, 4-2
in the second.

The Mavs will take on host Nebraska-Kearney and Rockhurst on Friday.
