POCATELLO, Idaho— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team won all nine matches plus a pair of exhibition sets in a dominating 7-0 Sunday afternoon win over The College of Idaho here in Idaho State University's Reed Gym.
The win allowed the Mavericks to split their opening weekend of the spring while moving back above .500 to 3-2 for the 2023-24 season. The Yotes fell to 2-3.
The Mavs were especially strong in the middle of the order as freshman
Devyn Rodriguez and sophomore
Delia Maier 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1 victories in at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively as the Mavs went up 3-0 in the team score after sweeping the doubles matches.
Kristen Thomas then clinched the dual with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles before
Issy Coman and
Makenna Livingston closed out 3-set wins in the top two flights. Coman was a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 winner over Hristina Ljuba at No. 1 while Livingston fought off a match point in a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9) victory over Lauren Kreutzer at No. 2 singles.
Julianna Campos also claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles to complete the sweep.
In doubles, No. 1 pair Coman and Livingston defeated Ljuba and Nicole Tran by a 6-4 margin to cap that session. Rodriguez and Campos were also 6-2 winners at No. 2 doubles while Maier and Thomas were 6-0 winners in the third flight.
Jane Steur and
Audrey O'Rear also claimed exhibition singles set victories by 6-0 and 6-1 margins, respectively.
The Mavericks will continue their spring with four matches next week in Kearney, Nebraska, beginning Thursday evening against William Jewell.
