GOLDEN, Colo.— Hope Matteson took third while
Sophie Lindauer placed fourth as they lead a group of Colorado Mesa University women's track & field pentathletes on Friday during the Mines Alumni Classic here in the Colorado School of Mines' Steinhauer Fieldhouse.
Matteson scored 3,232 points, just 31 of her personal-best, in the five events thanks in part to a winning high jump clearance of 1.65 meters (5 feet, 5 inches) and a personal-best shot put mark of 8.45 meters (27-8.75). She also won her heat of the 800 meters in 2:37.63 and posted a 60-meter hurdle time of 9.44 seconds while posting a long jump mark of 5.11 meters (16-9.25).
Meanwhile, Lindauer scored 3,158 points throughout a steady day of marks.
Reigning Rocky Mountain Athletic Champion
Katie Thomson finished sixth with 2,710 points despite finishing without a successful high jump clearance. She was amongst the top three performers in three of her other four events.
Maverick freshman
Atahlia Mills was right behind, taking seventh with 2,702 points in her collegiate debut. The Grand Junction native was especially strong in the jumping events, faring third best in the high jump with a mark of 1.56 meters (5-1.25) and fourth best in the long jump, with a third attempt effort of 5.20 meters (17-0.75) after fouling on her other two attempts.
CMU freshman
Kaitlyn Pearson was scratched from the event.
Mines' Avery Wright, the 2024 RMAC Outdoor Heptathlon Champion, won the 10-person competition. She fared best in four of the five disciplines and smashed her own school record with a mark of 3,822 points. Oredigger teammate Lisa Sutherland also set a NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying score of 3,506 points.
A large contingent of more than 60 Maverick athletes will open their indoor season on Saturday at the Mountaineer Open in Gunnison.
