The CMU cyclocross team packed their gear and traveled to Louisville, Kentucky to compete in the 2024 Collegiate Cyclocross National Championships. For the fifth consecutive year, the CMU cyclocross team was crowned National Champions yet again.
The 2024 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships kicked off on Thursday morning in below freezing temperatures at Joe Creason Park. In one of the most exciting races of the day, the Varsity Men's race had 56 starters, all eager to battle for the Stars and Stripes jersey. At the start of the race, there was a clear group of six rider competing for the title, three out of those six riders dressed in CMU gear:
Ivan Sippy,
Henry Coote, and
Jack Spranger. With one lap to go in the race, all six riders were still together fighting for the title, making for an interesting last lap. With the last sprint left of the lap, we saw
Ivan Sippy in first and
Jack Spranger shortly after in second who held this lead through the finish line.
Ivan Sippy finished in 53:28 in 1
st place an earned his 2
nd all-time National Championship award.
On the women's side, there was 51 female riders at the starting line. Early on in the race a small group of them broke loose and took the lead, among those riders representing CMU were
Cassidy Hickey. She stayed with that group for the rest of the race and finished second, with a total time of 43 minutes flat.
The Cyclocross National Championship continued on Friday morning with the Varsity Team Relay event, CMU was leading in the standings after winning the team rankings in both the men's and women's races. After an all-out battle, the team representing the Mavericks made out of:
Ivan Sippy,
Cassidy Hickey,
Chloe Fraser, and
Jack Spranger took the win for CMU, clinching the overall omnium at the same time. The Mavericks have dominated this race the past few years with Hickey, Spranger and Sippy being on the 2023 National Championship relay team.
On Saturday, the USA Cycling hosted their age classification races. On the men's side,
Henry Coote,
Ivan Sippy, and
Jack Spranger competed in CX Men U23. Coote finished first with a time of 52:11, Sippy came in second 25 seconds after, and Spranger in third 36 seconds after Coote. On the women's side,
Makena Kellerman and
Cassidy Hickey competed in CX Women U23, Kellerman and Hickey both finished with a time of 42:24. Familiar face and alumni Katie Clause finished second in the CX Women Pro race with a total time of 56:55.
CMU brings home the Varsity Team Omnium award with 240 points over Milligan University and Fort Lewis College at 196 points each. This brings the overall CMU record to 89 individual National championship titles, 20 team national championships, and 7 overall omnium titles.
