Cycling wins 4th consecutive Collegiate Road National Championship

MADISON, Wisc. - This year's host, Trek Bicycles, welcomed 22 Varsity programs from across the country to their headquarters in Waterloo, Wisconsin, for the 2025 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships. CMU riders acclimated to Wisconsin weather and challenging road conditions in hopes of being crowned this year's National Champions while defending their title.CMU had a 22point lead over the Marian Knights going into Road Nationals. The Mavericks have dominated the Road discipline over the past 3 years and look to make it a 4th consecutive year lead by upperclassmen Olivia Cummins, Kate Seiler, Luke Elphingstone and Vaughn Veenendaal.

1st Day Team Time Trial
Riders started the race weekend with a 24-kilometer Team Time Trial on Friday.
In the Varsity Women's race, the lady mavericks team composed of Cassidy Hickey, Olivia Cummins, Kate Seiler and Ella Sabo stopped the clock at 32:37min which was 11 seconds faster than women from Marian University.
In the Varsity Men's race, Milligan University was the team on top with a time of 27:51min to take the National Championship title. The CMU men finished 5th in a time of 28:40min.
After day one CMU was ranked 3rd with 138 points trailing Marian by 6 points

2nd Day Road Race
On Saturday, riders met at Trek's headquarters in Waterloo for the road race. The first race of the day was the Varsity Women, who completed five laps of the 13.1-mile rolling course. After the first 2 laps of virgurous attacks a group of 10 riders went of the front leaving the pack behind. CMU was the only team who had 3 riders in the group of the day, which included Ella Sabo, Cassidy Hickey and Samantha Scott. With two laps to go Jette Aelken from SCAD Savannah attacked out of the group and established a lead of up to 2:30min. Due to different interests in the chase group no organized chase got established leaving the group to sprint for 2nd place. After a phenomenal lead out by Samantha Scott(10th place), Cassidy Hickey and Ella Sabo secured 2nd and 3rd place. This performance secured top points in the team competition for the Women's road race.

Next up where the Varsity Men for seven intense laps. The race started fast, with multiple teams trying to establish a break in the opening laps, averaging over 28 mph. With four laps to go, the field shrunk to about half, and a group of seven broke away, and then slimmed to three. The CMU men missed the break and tried their hardest to make things happen but couldn't bring back the break that would fight for the win. Manolo Wrolich form Lee's-McRae College secured the national title, with Henry Nelson from Fort Lewis College grabbing silver and Luke Arens Marian University earning bronze. Best CMU rider was Luke Elphingstone in 9th followed by Vaughn Veenendaal in 17th.
The men only managed to earn 6th place team points for the Road Omnium. After day 2 Marian lead the overall standings with 288 points followed by CMU 273 points and Milligan with 260 points.

3rd Day Criterium
The final day of the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships took riders to downtown Madison for the criterium events. Riders navigated the four-corner course with long headwind and tailwind straights, as the wind picked up throughout the day. CMU needed to win both the men's and women's races to defend their National Championship title.
In the Varsity Women's race, Colorado Mesa University controlled most of the race, keeping things in check and setting up their sprinters for the finish. Their tactics paid off, delivering Cassidy Hickey (Parker, Colo.; Colorado Mesa University) to the line for the win and earning her the Individual Omnium title. Ava Wilson (Savannah, Ga.; SCAD Savannah) secured silver, with Samantha Clark (Louisville, Ky.; Milligan University) finishing third. CMU secured 2nd place for the team competition after the intermediate sprint points lifted them past Marian who finished 3rd. The situation before the last race of the championship was following: Marian 354p; CMU 345p; Milligan 340p
In order to secure the Championship the CMU men had to overcome a 9point deficit which meant they had to win and Marian had to place 3rd.

The Varsity Men's race was fast and attacks where flying left and right but no break could get established. After 80 minutes of racing, it came down to a field sprint with a photo finish(below), with CMU's Luke Elphingstone crossing the finish line first to earn the national title edging out Brody McDonald of Milligan University for second. Dylan Fluckiger and Nolan Church rounded out a phenomenal team display in 7th and 8th place respectively.  This was enough to secure the top spot for the Men's Criterium team point. Marian only managed to secure enough points to finish third, which meant CMU secured their 4th consecutive Team Road Omnium and the 5th consecutive Overall Omnium which combines all 4 disciplines teams compete in throughout the academic year.
