INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Colorado Mesa University Cycling added another Stars and Stripes trophy to its collection Saturday (Sept. 12), winning the 2026 USA Cycling Collegiate Track Varsity Team Omnium National Championship at the Major Taylor Velodrome.
The Mavericks accumulated 986 points, edging Marian University by just two points, 986-984, to claim the team championship. Savannah College of Art and Design finished third with 825 points.
The title marks the 25th discipline-specific team omnium national championship in CMU Cycling history and gives the Mavericks 34 team omnium national championships overall when combined with the program's nine overall season omnium crowns.
CMU's championship effort was led by
Ella Sabo, who claimed the Women's Individual Omnium National Championship after winning three events during the three-day meet.
Sabo earned national titles in the Points Race, Kilo Time Trial and Scratch Race, while also finishing second in the Sprint and Individual Pursuit. Teammate
Rue Tomko finished third in the Women's Individual Omnium.
The Mavericks also swept the Team Pursuit national championships and established a new track record.
The women's team of Tomko, Sabo,
Landrie McLain and
Claire Pekarek won in 4:53.449, more than nine seconds ahead of Marian.
Jake Sandau,
Kalen Brown,
Jade Rohde and
Oliver Welcker followed by capturing the men's title in 4:24.943.
Welcker added another Stars and Stripes jersey in the Men's Scratch Race, winning a photo finish over Marian's Fred Meredith. Welcker also placed second in the Men's Individual Omnium and earned bronze in both the Kilo Time Trial and Individual Pursuit.
CMU's depth proved critical in a championship decided by only two points.
In the Women's Points Race, Sabo took gold while Pekarek finished third, Tomko fourth and McLain fifth, giving the Mavericks four of the top five finishers. Sabo won the Women's Kilo in 1:13.203, with Tomko third and
Isabella Kroutil fourth.
Colorado Mesa also finished second in the Co-Ed Team Sprint, less than one second behind Marian, earning valuable points toward the final team standings.
The weekend continued an extended championship run for a CMU program that has won collegiate titles across road, track, mountain bike, cyclocross and BMX.
Entering the weekend, Colorado Mesa's historical records included 104 individual and event national championships. The Mavericks added seven more in Indianapolis — the men's and women's Team Pursuits, Sabo's three individual event victories and Individual Omnium crown, and Welcker's Scratch Race title — bringing the program's total to 111.
CMU has now won 25 discipline team omnium championships, including the 2026 Road and Track crowns, in addition to its nine overall team omnium national championships.
