INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The No. 14 Colorado Mesa men's wrestling team wrapped up action at the 45
th Midwest Classic on Sunday (Dec. 15) afternoon. Colorado Mesa finished with four placers and wound up inside the top ten on team scores.
The Mavericks finished with 74.5 points which was good enough for a 10
th place finish in the 43-team field. Wisconsin-Parkside eclipsed day one leader, and No. 2 ranked, Central Oklahoma for the team title.
Sophomore
Dayson Torgerson was the highest finisher of any Maverick as he took fifth place at 125 pounds. Torgerson fell early in the quarterfinals to Colton Drousias of Glenville State 7-4 in sudden victory. The Richfield, Utah native went on to win his next two bouts with both coming against RMAC foes.
He defeated Christian Lopez 5-4 as he scored a third-round takedown to take the lead and was able to ride out Lopez for the win. In his next bout, he was able to pick up a major decision win over Hunter Jacobsen of Chadron State 13-5.
Torgerson would fall in the consolation semifinal round to Anthony Anciete of Tiffin 4-2 before taking a medical forfeit win of Drousias.
Ryan Wheeler picked up a win in his quarterfinal bout against No. 8 Casey Barnett of Tiffin 14-8 but had to bow out of the tournament due to an injury suffered in the bout. Wheeler still managed to place sixth at the weight despite the setback.
Senior
Gabriel Carranza placed seventh at 197 pounds after going 2-2 on the day. Carranza fell in his quarterfinal bout in his first match before rebounding with a 4-1 victory over Tyson Lien of Northern State to enter the placement rounds.
The Victorville, Calif. native fell in his next bout to Kaine Morris of Ashland by a second-round pin but followed it up with a win over RMAC foe Ryan Cody of Mines by pin at 2:53 in the seventh-place match.
285-pounder
Tyler Doyle wound up in seventh place as he finished his day 2-2. The junior fell in sudden victory to Carter Blough of Grand Valley State. He bounced back with a win over Caleb Wunsch of Newman 5-2 in the blood round to guarantee is spot on the podium.
He fell to Jake Swirple of Minot State 4-1 in his next match before defeating Colby Whitehill of Glenville State 4-2 in the seventh-place match to finish out the tournament.
Oran Huff and
Jason Bynarowicz each won their first match of the day but fell in the Round of 12 and one match shy of finishing in the top-8 at their respective weight.
The Mavericks will return to action after the New Year when they compete in the Western Colorado Open and the Tracy Borah Duals in Gunnison on January 10-11.
