CLERMONT, Fla.— Shannon Feran,
Mackenzie Mayer and
Torin Lackmann all claimed all-America honors to lead the Colorado Mesa University women's triathlon team to a fourth place finish in the NCAA Division II portion of the standings here at Saturday's Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championships.
Feran, already the most decorated Maverick triathlete in program history, capped her career with a fourth straight College Triathlon Coaches Association All-America honor, placing ninth amongst Division II triathletes and 57th overall with an overall time of one hour, four minutes, eight seconds. The redshirt senior from Broomfield, Colorado, was a second team all-America honoree with those honors going to the eighth through 14
th place finishers in each of the three NCAA Divisions.
Meanwhile, Mayer took 18
th amongst Division II finishers in her national championship debut. The freshman out of Moab, Utah had an overall time of 1:05.29, placing 72nd overall in the field of more than 200, including 69 Division II triathletes.
Lackmann also claimed Honorable Mention CTCA All-America honors, placing 21
st amongst Division II finishers and 81
st overall in 1:06.27. Lackmann, a senior from Norwalk, Iowa, now has three career all-America plaudits.
Maverick junior
Nadine Klive was the team's fourth finisher, missing out on what would have been a third straight all-America honors by a single place. She took 22
nd amongst Division II athletes and 87
th overall with a time of 1:07.06. Honorable Mention All-America honors were given to the 15
th-21
st place finishers in each division
Freshman
Mariana Batarse Duenes placed 27
th amongst Division II athletes and 95th overall in 1:07:50 while fellow freshman
Shantelle Tupaz took 30
th amongst Division II athletes and 100
th overall in 1:08:19. Tupaz raced in the third and final wave after qualifying to be with the top overall athletes in the field at last month's West National Qualifier, where she was named as the CTCA's West All-Region Freshman and to the Division II All-West Region team.
The rest of the Mavericks, including
Josie Williams, who finished 39
th amongst Division II athletes and 113
th overall in 1:11:22, raced in the second wave.
Saturday's portion of the event included a 20-kilometer bike and 5-kilometer run and two transitions in the Lake Louis State Park. Each of the three waves began in a pursuit style format based on
the results of Friday's open swim time trial at the nearby Clermont Watersports Complex.
The final combined times for each individual in all three waves were then merged together to determine the overall placements and then once again separated to determine the final divisional standings and awards.
The Mavericks finished 13
th overall with 582 team points.
Arizona won the overall title with 942 points, ending Arizona State's 7-year run atop Division I by a margin of 22 points. Arizona State did have the overall individual champion in Naomi Ruff, who posted a time of 59:08. Arizona did have the second, third and sixth place finishers.
Wingate won the Division II title with 742 points while stopping Lenoir-Rhyne from claiming a third straight crown by just five points.
Wingate's Carla Larrabeiti was the top overall Division II finisher, taking 15
th in 1:00:45, ten spots better than LR's Sabrina Fleig, who was 25
th in 1:01:22.
North Central (Ill.) again won the Division III title with 525 points as Hailey Poe was the top finisher from that division. She finished 66
th overall in 1:05:03.
