Mavericks Fall to Orediggers on Criteria

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Each team won five bouts on the evening. Neither team recorded a pin, picked up a forfeit, or was disqualified in a bout on the night. It came down to the third tie-breaker which gave the visiting Colorado School of Mines a 19-18 win over the Colorado Mesa Mavericks on Saturday (Jan. 27) afternoon in matinee RMAC dual action.

Mines recorded more match points than Colorado Mesa by a 75-65 margin giving them the extra point in the team score. The loss snaps a 12-match home dual winning streak for Colorado Mesa that dates to December 10, 2020 (25-24 Tri-Dual loss to Western Colorado).

The two teams traded wins in the first two bouts with Mines' Christian Lopez earned a narrow 11-10 win over Dayson Torgerson at 125 pounds before Maverick Oran Huff claimed a 15-5 major decision victory over Trebor Moreno at 133 pounds.

Mines shot forward after back-to-back wins at 141 and 149 pounds which gave them a 10-4 advatage heading into the 157-pound bout.

Colorado Mesa welcomed back 157-pounder Owen Cline after an absence due to injury. Cline was able to pick up a hard fought 5-2 win over Jakob Smith. The win was sandwiched by two Oredigger wins on either side as they would claim a decision victory at 165 pounds and a technical fall win at 174 pounds.

That left the final three matches of the evening with Colorado Mesa needing a win each of those three bouts with bonus points in at least two of them to tie. They would get just that.

Nationally ranked Jason Bynarowicz claimed a 9-0 major decision victory at 184-pounds followed by a 13-5 major decision victory at 197 pounds by Gabe Carranza.

Tyler Doyle made good on what the Mavericks needed to tie as he earned a tough 2-1 decision win at 285-pounds over a defensive Laith Ibrahim.

Unfortunately, the needed one more bonus point win somewhere on the evening as the tie-breaker went the way of the Orediggers.

The Mavericks will be back in action tomorrow as they will host #15 Chadron State in matinee dual set to begin at 2:00pm.
