ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's wrestling team could not get anything going against the Adams State Grizzlies as they fell 23-15 on Friday (Jan. 12) evening in Plachy Hall.
 
The loss snaps a 17 match Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual winning streak for the Mavericks which dates to January 23, 2021, when they fell 24-18 to No. 18 Colorado School of Mines in Golden.
 
The Mavericks lost the first six matches of the dual and trailed 20-0 as the Grizzlies secured the first four matches by decision before back-to-back major decisions at 157 and 165 pounds.
 
At 174 pounds, Gus Dalton snapped the Adams State streak with a 9-3 decision over Samuel Loera. After surrendering a takedown in the early moments of the first period, Dalton scored the next 10 points unanswered which included the riding time point.
 
In the perceived match of the night, sixth-ranked Jason Bynarowicz of Colorado Mesa took on Grand Junction native Hunter Tobiasson. The Match featured a little bit of the wacky and quirky moves you would expect from the two wrestlers.
 
Tobiasson struck first as he clamped down on a cradle and tried several times to turn Bynarowicz but couldn't. He did, however, secure a takedown in the process. With Bynarowicz starting down on the restart, Tobiasson looked to put the legs in but a quick sit out by the Maverick and a 'spider' technique, led to a defensive pin giving Bynarowicz the pin just 51 seconds into the match.
 
The win gave the Mavericks back-to-back wins and an opportunity to still win the dual as they trailed 20-9.
 
That possibility was thwarted as the Grizzlies took the 197-pound bout as they clinched the dual at 23-9.
 
Sophomore Tyler Doyle closed the dual with a pin at 2:58 over Abraham Garcia. Doyle dominated the match until he was able to finally turn Garcia for the pin.
 
Colorado Mesa will return home for a pair of duals beginning on Saturday January 27 when they host Colorado School of Mines in Brownson Arena at 4:00pm. The next afternoon they will host Chadron State at 2:00pm in Brownson Arena.
