GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Dropping only two sets, the Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team defeated CSU Pueblo for the 40th consecutive time in dual meets, claiming a 7-0 victory Saturday at the Elliott Tennis Center. CMU is now 49-11 all-time against the ThunderWolves.
Only two singles matches went to three sets, with Makenna Livingston rallying for a 2-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-6) victory over Marta Garcia at No. 2. Julianna Campos also came back after dropping her first set at No. 4 singles to defeat Valentina Brienza 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6).
Issy Coman had a good battle at No. 1 singles with Mariangel Nunez, prevailing 6-4, 7-5. Freshman Devyn Rodriguez wrapped up her stellar fall season with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Margot Aebscher at No. 3 singles, improving to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in duals.
Delia Maier at No. 5 singles and Kristen Thomas at No. 6, got the Mavericks out to a dominant lead with straight-set victories after the Mavericks swept the doubles matches.
Thomas was the first off the court in singles, winning 6-0, 6-2 against Malya Pendon, and Maier made it 3-0 with her 6-2 6-0 win over Yelena Travica. Livingston's win at No. 2 singles clinched the dual for the Mavericks, who completed the fall portion of the schedule 2-1 in duals.
CMU coach Dan MacDonald switched up his doubles lineup, with Campos and Rodriguez playing No. 1 and winning 6-2. Coman and Thomas claimed a 7-5 victory at No. 2 and Livingston and Maier claimed a 6-1 victory at No. 3.
The Mavericks also won all of the exhibition matches, with Audrey O'Rear and Jane Steur winning 6-0 against Avery Soto and Charley Madlock in doubles, O'Rear defeating Soto 6-3, 6-0 in singles and Steur and Kenna Kelley each taking a set 6-0 against Madlock.
