MESCALERO, N.M. — Cole Beyer and Timmy Cavarno led the way Monday for the Colorado Mesa men's golf team in the RJGA South Central Shootout at the Inn of the Mountain Gods Golf Course.
After both shot even-par 72 in Monday morning's first round, they remained tied with one another in the afternoon, shaving two strokes off their respective scores at 2-under 70. They're tied for 10th at 142, moving up five spots from the morning leaderboard.
The Mavericks are in fourth place at 571, trailing Colorado Christian's 566. West Texas A&M and Western New Mexico are tied for second, one stroke ahead of the Mavs, entering Tuesday's final round.
Beyer's second round, which started on No. 12 in the shotgun start, included four birdies and a pair of bogeys. Beyer, listed as CMU's No. 3 man, birdied one par-4 and one par-5 on each side, and his two bogeys came on the front nine.
Cavarno, playing in the No. 5 spot, had solid back-to-back rounds, and he started the second round right, with an eagle-3 on the second-longest hole on the course, the 552-yard No. 14, his starting hole.
He played the back nine in 3-under 33, adding a pair of birdies and two bogeys. He bogeyed twice on the front nine but birdied No. 9 for a 1-over 37.
CMU was tied with Colorado Christian for the lead after the first round at 285, led by Pablo Diaz del Castillo's opening 70 and a 71 from Dylan Everett.
Diaz del Castillo shot 2-over 74 in the afternoon and is tied for 19th, Everett was 3 over in the second round and is tied for 26th with Yael Chahin, both at 2-over 146.
CMU leads the field in par-3 and par-4 scoring and is tied for the lead with 109 pars through two rounds. Beyer is tied atop the chart in par-4 scoring at 3.90.
The third and final round begins at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, with the Mavericks playing with Colorado Christian, West Texas A&M and Western New Mexico.
