Cycling claims road national championship

The CMU cycling team wrapped up its racing season by winning the last leg of the circuit for USA Cycling Collegiate Nationals in Albuquerque on Sunday. The Road race brings closure to the season after the CMU Cycling team won the National Championships for the first three disciplines of Track, Mountain Bike and Cyclocross.  The 25-year-old CMU Cycling program now has a record of 74 individual student National Championships, 16 Team discipline National Championships and 6 overall Omnium National Championships. This marks the first time in CMU Cycling history that the program has won 1st at all four disciplines. This brings the tally up to the 3rd consecutive year that the program has achieved the overall omnium award as the premier Varsity Collegiate Program in the country.  The program will start back up in August after they send off their four seniors next week, Ellie Mitchell, Evan Boone, Lance Abshire & Ian Anderson.

Team highlights from Road Nationals:
Olivia Cummins finished 2nd in the omnium after a 3rd place in the Criterium and 4th place in the Road Race. Ian Anderson was the runner up in the men's omnium for the Mavericks finishing 2nd in the Road race and 5th in the Criterium.

CMU claimed first place after scoring a total of 444 points at the three-day championships (Totaling points from the men's and women's team time trial, road race and criterium). Milligan University of Tennessee finished second with 404 points. CMU rivals Fort Lewis College of Durango finished in 3rd and Marian University of Indianapolis finished in 4th at the 2023 collegiate road nationals.

In the Individual time trial Junior Isabella Rich was the fastest among the Varsity competition and won her first individual National Championship. In the men's field Iver Skaarseth finished 4th.

Saturday featured the 60-mile Road Race for both the women and men's teams. The CMU Women raced a phenomenal race. In the end DSM World Tour rider Megan Jastrab (Milligan University) got away with the win after an impressive race. CMU's Olivia Cummins was the highest finisher for the Mavericks in 4th place followed by CMU's Kate Seiler in 10th.

The men's race was highly animated, CMU and Fort Lewis college pushed the race from the front. In the end, the group was split up significantly and FLC's Kellen Caldwell had a great day and rode away with the win. CMU's Ian Anderson followed in second outsprinting Patton Sims of Belmont Abby. CMU's Iver Skaarseth finished in 8th place.

Sunday featured the Criterium race to wrap up the last leg of the weekend. CMU Women finished with 3 riders in the top 10. Olivia Cummins in 3rd, Chloe Fraser in 5th and Kate Seiler in 6th. With the points gathered CMU took over the lead in the Team Omnium standings before the men's race started.

In the final race of the day the CMU men rode hard and had seniors Ian Anderson and Lance Abshire in the 9 men breakaway that would contest for the win. After 80 min of Lance Abshire leading the pace of the race, he finished 3rd and CMU's Ian Anderson finished his stelar career (8 National Championships) as a Mav in 5th place.
