Mavs drop tight decision to Holy Names

FRESNO, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team came up on the short end of a hard-fought battle, falling 4-3 to Holy Names University on Saturday evening here at the Fresno State University Tennis Courts.

Four of the six singles matches were settled in three sets, including the ultimate match-winner, which was decided in a third-set tie-breaker by just three points.

The Mavericks received singles wins from William Leschig, Jorge Abreu and Henry Scheck in the second, third and fifth flights, but dropped two of the three doubles matches and a pair of 3-set singles matches to fall to 5-8 on the season.  The Hawks claimed their first win in nine duals this spring.

CMU's Tyler Landen and Jandre Van Wyk were victorious in doubles as they claimed a 6-4 win over Luka Schoemer and Patrick Wnuk in the top flight.  However, the Hawks book-ended the doubles matches, winning 7-5 at No. 3 doubles before Ellison Greco and Jannes Hauck pulled out a 6-4 win at No. 2 to give the Hawks the doubles point.

In singles, the teams traded blows as Wnuk claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win oat No. 1 to give the Hawks a 2-0 overall lead before Leschig won 6-4, 6-1 over Benedikt Rake at No. 2 to give the Mavs their first point.  Abreu then claimed a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 win over Phil Schollhorn at No. 3 singles to tie the overall score at 2.

The Hawks then won at No. 6 singles as Regnar Madarang got by Tegan Hartman, 6-3, 5-7, 6-0.

The Mavs then bounced right back with Scheck's 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 come-from-behind win over Rajan Bhatia, which leveled the overall score at 3-3.

However, Greco pulled out the victory for the Hawks, edging Diogo Manzano, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).

The Mavericks will play two more Pacific West Conference matches on Sunday against Fresno Pacific and Hawai'i Hilo before returning home to Colorado for the rest of the regular season.
