FRESNO, Calif.— Battling rain showers throughout a stop and start day, the Colorado Mesa University Maverick tennis dropped decisions to Fresno Pacific University on Sunday here at the Sunbirds' Haak Tennis Complex.
The Maverick women fell 4-1 while the CMU men dropped a 4-0 decision. Both matches were played to clinch.
The women received a point from sophomore
Macy Richards, who won her No. 3 singles match over Audrey Ouellet by a convincing 6-2, 6-0 margin. However, the Sunbirds won the other three completed singles matches in the first, second and fourth flights in straight sets after winning at No. 1 and 2 doubles. The other doubles match was left unfinished.
The No. 5 and 6 singles matches were as well although
Paige Furin was leading her No. 6 singles match by a 5-1 score in the first set.
In the men's dual, the Sunbirds won by 6-3 scores at No. 1 and 3 doubles to take the early advantage in the dual. They then swept the top three singles flights although
Tyler Landen and
William Leschig took their No. 1 and 2 singles matches to three sets.
Emil Hultman and
Jandre Van Wyk had also won the first sets of their No. 4 and 5 singles matches, respectively, before both of those went unfinished.
Due to rains that slowed the progress, the Mavs' other matches against the Hawai'i Hilo men and Dominican women were postponed until Monday.
