FRESNO, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team picked up a much needed Pacific West Conference win as they closed out their stay in Fresno with a 4-0 victory over the University of Hawa'i-Hilo Vulcans on Monday here at the Haak Tennis Complex.
The Mavericks improved to 6-9 overall with their first win over a fellow PacWest foe this season while the Vulcans slipped to 2-8. The victory was also the Mavs' first in three all-time tries against the Vulcans, who have played in the last four NCAA Division II Championship Tournaments.
Seven different Mavericks won matches throughout the day as
Jorge Abreu and
Tegan Hartman clinched the doubles point with 6-3 win at No. 3 after
Tyler Landen and
Jandre Van Wyk won 6-1 at the No. 2 doubles. The Mavs were also leading the No. 1 doubles match, which was left unfinished, 5-2.
The Mavericks then swept the three completed singles matches as
Henry Scheck defeated Luka Petrikic by convincing 6-1 margins in both sets of the No. 6 singles matches.
Emil Hultman then closed out Ryosuke Sowa, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles before
William Leschig clinched the dual with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Filippo Di Perna at No. 2 singles.
The Mavs are slated to play the Vulcans again on Apr. 7 in Denver and will continue their season there at MSU Denver on Mar. 31.
