Maverick men split Saturday matches

Scheck wins two singles matches to remain unbeaten in duals

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team claimed an 8-1 Saturday evening win over Colorado College, bouncing back quickly from a 6-1 loss to Pacific West Conference rival and 31st-ranked MSU Denver earlier in the day in Denver.

The Saturday split moved the Mavericks' record to 7-10.

The Mavs have now lost 13 straight duals to the Roadrunners but have won 19 straight since 2012 over the Tigers.

Against the CC Tigers (4-6), the Mavericks swept the doubles matches and claimed four straight-set and five overall singles wins to claim the comfortable win in the 9-point format still played by NCAA Division III squads.

Against MSU Denver (11-3) at the Roadrunners' Assembly Athletic Complex, freshman Henry Scheck claimed a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) win over Carlos Pinedo at No. 6 singles before moving into the No. 3 singles spot to defeat CC's Nate Beerman, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 in the night-cap here at Memorial Park.  Scheck moved to 10-0 in duals and a team-best 12-3 overall with the wins.

Scheck also teamed with Jandre Van Wyk for an 8-6 No. 2 doubles victory over the Tigers.  William Leschig and Tyler Landen also won by the same scoreline at No. 1 doubles while Jorge Abreu and Tegan Hartman were 8-7 (7-5) winners at No. 3 to give the Mavs a comfortable 3-0 overall lead.

Hartman and Leschig then posted 6-1, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-4 wins at No. 6 and 1 singles, respectively, to clinch the dual early in singles play.  The Mavs continued their momentum with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win by Diogo Manzano at No. 4 and another 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) triumph by Abreu in the second flight.

The Tigers then claimed their lone team point at No. 5 singles before Scheck finished off the dual with his victory over Beerman in what was his first appearance in the top half of the Maverick lineup.

Although the Roadrunners won the earlier match-up, re-scheduled for Saturday morning after high winds thwarted the originally scheduled Friday match, it was much tighter than it would appear from a quick glance at the final score.

Three of the six singles matches went to three sets while the Roadrunners won five other singles sets by either 6-4 or 7-5 scorelines after winning by 6-3 and 6-4 scores in the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches.  The third doubles match was left unfinished in the tie-breaker as the doubles point was played to clinch.

In singles, Alejandro Jimenez outlasted CMU freshman Emil Hultman for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win in the third flight while Stephen Kossifas came from a set down to defeat Abreu, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4.

Jeanloup Auzias, ranked 56th nationally, also had to outlast CMU's Tyler Landen, 6-4, 7-5 in the top flight.

The Mavericks will return to Denver next Friday (Apr. 7) for a 10 a.m. neutral-court and massively important PacWest match with Hawai'i-Hilo before returning home to the Elliott Tennis Center for their first home dual of the season against CC next Saturday in what will be their final chances to impress the PacWest tournament selection and seeding committee.

They will then wrap up the regular season at home with a Apr. 15 Senior Day re-match with MSU Denver.
