Sampson named National Swimmer of the Year

27 Mavericks combine for 80 total CSCAA All-America honors

RICHMOND, Va.— Colorado Mesa University's Ben Sampson was named as the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association (CSCAA) NCAA Division II Men's Swimmer of the Year on Monday evening.

He was also one of 21 Mavericks (12 women, 9 men) who earned at least one first team all-America honor that were formally announced by the organization after results of last week's NCAA Division II National Championships in Indianapolis and is the first Maverick to receive the honor.  The Mavericks also had six other athletes (5 men, 1 woman) who were second team honorees as the Mavericks racked up 80 total (40 men's, 40 women's) honors, including 45 first team plaudits during an impressive and program-record setting performance.

The Mavs had 24 top-8 finishes throughout the meet, including 17 individual efforts and seven other relay performances.

The CSCAA's major awards were determined by a nation-wide vote of swimming and head diving coaches.  First team all-America plaudits go to the top eight finishers in each event while second team selections go to the ninth through 16th place finishers.

Sampson, a redshirt sophomore from Arvada, Colorado, led the way for the Mavericks winning the national title in both the 200-yard individual medley and 200 backstroke.  He is the first male swimmer in CMU history to win a title after Lily Borgenheimer became the first women's swimmer to do so last year in the 200 breast.

He had also set the NCAA Division II record of 1:40.73 (1:39.53-altitude adjusted) in November during the TYR/CMU Invitational.

Two Maverick divers— Ammar Hassan (6) and Isaiah Cheeks (1)— have also won a combined seven national championships.  Both had been named as the CSCAA's NCAA Division II Men's Diver of the Year.

Sampson was also an all-American in all seven of his events, picking up six first team honors after finishing third in the 400 IM, fourth in the 100 back, fifth in the 800 free relay, eighth in the 200 medley relay.  He also helped the Mavs to a ninth place finish in the 400 medley relay and is now a 14-time all-American over the last two seasons.

That total is the second highest in program history behind only Mahmoud Elgayar, who received two more all-America honors to complete his brilliant career with 15 total honors.  He received at least one in each of his five seasons.

The CMU men placed a program-best fifth at the national meet.

Meanwhile, the CMU women did one better, finishing a program-best fourth to earn the program's first ever national team trophy.

Lauren White received seven all-America honors to raise her total to a CMU all-sports record of 23.  She was a first team honoree in five events, including all four relays (200 & 400 medley, 400 & 800 free) and the 100 back, an event in which she placed fifth.

Borgenheimer was also an All-American in all six of her events, earning first team honors in five of them.  She finished her career with 21 total all-America honors, 18 of which were earned in three years at CMU after winning three in her first two collegiate seasons at Minnesota State.

Katerina Matoskova also earned six total honors.
