CMU swimmers garner seven top-8 finishes on Friday

INDIANAPOLIS— The women's 200 freestyle relay team of turned in a second place finish and a school-record time to punctuate a strong Friday of swimming and diving for the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks on the penultimate day of action at the NCAA Division II Championships, which will conclude on Saturday evening here at the Indiana University Natatorium.

The Mavericks combined for another 20 College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America All-America honors, including ten first team efforts, and continue to sit fourth in the women's and fifth in the men's team standings.

Ruby Bottai, Izzy Powers, Logan Anderson and Ada Qunell combined for a time of one minute, 32.12 seconds in the relay as the Mavericks turned in their best-ever relay finish at the NCAA Championships.  The runner-up time was also good for 34 of the Mavericks' 108 Day 4 women's points as they surged past their program-record of 241 national championship points set en-route to a fifth place finish at last year's meet in Greensboro, North Carolina.

With five women's events still to be decided, the Mavs have already amassed 258 team points and continue to lurk right behind Drury (263 ½) in third place.  The Mavs are also 66 ahead of West Chester in fifth place while Nova Southeastern has put up 434 ½ points through 16 events to open a 90 ½ point lead on the hometown UIndy Greyhounds.

The CMU men continue to sit fifth with 204 ½ points and are within sight of fourth-place Tampa (225) as they also bid to turn in a program-record high finish after taking sixth with a program-record 221 points a year ago.  They are nine points ahead of Findlay entering Saturday's portion of the meet and are just 16 ½ points away from matching the program record.

They will be represented in all six of the remaining events.

The women's relay effort, which shattered the Mavs' former school-record and qualifying time of 1:32.74 was far from the Mavs' lone highlight of the day and night.

After Kyra Apodaca earned her fourth career CSCAA Second Team All-America honor with a tenth place finish (422.60 points) in the women's 3-meter diving event during the afternoon, the Mavs got to work scoring points in the evening session.

Freshman Olivia Hansson won the consolation final of the women's 500 free to place ninth overall in 4:53.66 before Katerina Matoskova touched fifth in the championship final with a time of 4:53.06 as the Mavs scored 23 points in the event.  Hansson earned her second all-America honor of the meet.

Lauren White then finished fifth in the 100 back with a time of 54.41 seconds before Matoskova finished tenth in the consolation final, held just minutes after her 500 free effort.  She finished the 100 back in 55.05 seconds and now has ten all-America honors in her career, four of which have come this week.

White has now won 21 career all-America honors, a CMU all-sports record.  She has five this week.

The Mav women then had two representatives in the 100 breaststroke as Lily Borgenheimer finished seventh in 1:02.62 to earn her 20th career all-America honor, 17 of which have come in three years at CMU.  Freshman Maddi Moran also joined the all-America club with an eighth place time of 1:02.99.

The relay team then scored the team's final 34 points of the night as Bottai earned her fourth career All-America honor after a 23.70-second lead-off split.  Powers, swimming for the first time this week, garnered her second career honor while Anderson picked up her sixth.  Qunell, a freshman picked up her second all-America honor of the week after finishing fourth in the 800 free relay earlier this week.

The Maverick men also had some solid performances as Dejan Urbanek led the way with a third-place time of 1:45.30 in the 200 butterfly.  He now has eight career all-America honors, four of which have come this week.

Ben Sampson also recorded his third top-4 individual finish of the week, placing fourth in the 100 back with a time of 47.12 seconds.  He picked up his sixth all-America certificate of the week and the 13th in his career.

Kuba Kiszczak also placed 16th in 49.02 seconds to earn one of two Second Team CSCAA All-America honors of the night.

Earlier, Matheus Laperriere finished 10th in the 500 free, touching in 4:24.63 to take second in the consolation heat.  Kyle Benjamin was also in the same heat and finished 14th overall in 4:28.15.  Laperriere now has six career all-America honors while Benjamin has four, three of which have come this week as a Maverick after earning the first as a freshman in 2019 while swimming for Concordia University Irvine.

The Maverick men then finished the night with a 14th place finish in the 200 free relay.  Mado Elkady, Kiszczak, Felipe D'Orsi and Lane Austin combined for a time of 1:20.69 as Elkady won his third career all-America honor.  D'Orsi now has five while Austin has garnered a dozen.  Kiszczak has six.

Saturday's portion of the meet will get underway at 10 a.m. Eastern (8 a.m. Mountain) with preliminary heats in the 100 free, 200 back and 200 breast events followed by the slower-seeded sections of the 1,650 free.

Men's 1-meter diving preliminary action will begin at 1 p.m. Eastern (11 a.m. Mountain) while the final session of the meet will get underway at 6 p.m. Eastern (4 p.m. Mountain).
