INDIANAPOLIS— The Colorado Mesa University swimming and diving team had a very successful Friday morning preliminary session qualifying six swimmers for the evening championship races while placing five in the consolation finals as the Mavericks secured participation in eight of the evening's ten swimming events, including the 200 free relays.
The Mavericks women were paced by
Lauren White, who emerged as the top qualifier in the 100-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 54.27 seconds.
Katerina Matoskova also finished ninth in qualifying with a time of 55.02 seconds and will be the top seed in the consolation final, which will determine ninth through 16
th places.
Matoskova had a tough double after qualifying seventh for the championship final in the 500 free. She turned in a time of 4:54.24 in that event.
The Mavs also put two women in the 100 breast as freshman
Maddi Moran posted a career-best time of 1:02.53 to finish seventh in the preliminary heats. School-record holder
Lily Borgenheimer also turned in a time of 1:02.59 to finish eighth and earn a lane for the "A" final.
Elsewhere, freshman
Olivia Hansson turned in the tenth fastest time in the 500 free prelims, touching in 4:56.12.
Sophomore
Sophia Bains, coming off a sixth place finish in Thursday night's 400 individual medley, also broke five minutes as she won her heat while finishing 17
th in 4:59.25 as she moved up a spot to seventh in program history. Bains will be the first alternate for a potential spot in the consolation final.
Amelia Kinnard also placed 20
th in 4:59.34 while
Ada Qunell tied for 45
th in 5:05.56.
The Maverick men also had two consolation final qualifiers in the 500 free as
Matheus Laperriere smashed his former personal best of 4:29.58 (altitude-adjusted), touching in 4:25.72 to finish 12
th in the preliminary heats. He now ranks fourth in program history.
Kyle Benjamin, who ranks third, also fared well, qualifying 13
th in 4:27.53.
Jacob Troescher was just off his season-best with a time of 4:31.87 to finish 24
th while
Gavin Anderson placed 34
th in 4:36.42.
In the 100 back,
Ben Sampson cruised to a time of 47.49 seconds to finish sixth in qualifying while
Kuba Kiszczak posted a career-best time of 48.13 seconds to move up to fifth in program history while reaching the consolation final as the 16th place qualifier.
Andrew Scoggin narrowly missed the finals, placing 18
th in 48.38.
Mahmoud Elgayar was also a near miss in the 100 breast, as he placed 17
th in 54.50 seconds but will be the first alternate.
Dejan Urbanek then capped the session qualifying sixth for the 200 butterfly final as he posted a time of 1:46.10 in his best individual swim of the 5-day meet that continues through Saturday.
The Mavericks also have a representative in the women's 3-meter diving event as
Kyra Apodaca is diving in the preliminary round that got underway at 1 p.m. Eastern (11 a.m. Mountain). The ninth through 16
th place finishers will contest the consolation round following that while the top eight qualifiers will dive for the title during the evening session, which gets underway at 6 p.m. Eastern (4 p.m. Mountain).
