SALT LAKE CITY— Ben Sampson won two events to lead the Colorado Mesa University Maverick swimming team's efforts in a Friday afternoon dual against NCAA Division I and Pac-12 Conference foe Utah in the Ute Natatorium.
The Ute men claimed a 112-52 win over the Mavericks while Utah took the women's dual, 128-38.
Sampson was victorious in both the 100-yard backstroke and the 400-yard individual medley. He posted times of 49.45 seconds and 4:16.49, respectively.
A total of nine swimming events were contested in each dual, the first of two this weekend. The teams will compete again on Saturday morning at 11 a.m., in a dual that will include diving competitions.
In addition to Sampson's two wins, the Mavs recorded six other second place finishes and five third place tallies.
In the women's 200 free, freshman
Ada Qunell took second in 1:56.33 before
Kuba Kiszczak finished second in the men's 200 free with a time of 1:43.46.
Dejan Urbanek finished third in the 200 fly (1:55.30).
In the women's 400 IM,
Sophia Bains took second in 4:43.26 while
Amelia Kinnard was third in 4:50.91.
Jeremy Koch was second in the men's 400 IM at 4:16.49 while
Mahmoud Elgayar recorded a third-place time of 4:17.87.
The Mavs also finished second in both 200 free relays at the end of each dual. Women's quartet
Ruby Bottai,
Lauren White,
Izzy Powers and
Logan Anderson turned in a time of 1:39.73 while
Felipe D'Orsi, Kiszczak,
Andrew Scoggin and
Lane Austin combined for a time of 1:25.41 in the men's race. Both Maverick "B" teams were also credited with third place finishes.
