COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University freshmen
Caden Kelly and
Jakob Werner swept the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Swimmer of the Week honors while
Emma Lence claimed the second straight RMAC Women's Diver of the Week accolade, conference officials announced Thursday afternoon.
Kelly, a native of Germantown, Wisconsin won the first women's swimmer honor of her career while Werner, who hails from Darmstad, Germany, claimed the men's honor after a school-record setting weekend.
Lence, a native of Fraser, Colorado, had also been recognized on Oct. 22. Awards were not bestowed last week after less than half of the RMAC's teams competed.
The Mavericks all turned in impressive performances in last Saturday's Halloween dual at NCAA Division I Denver, where the Maverick men turned in a dominant 83-point win over the Pioneers. Kelly and Lence were amongst the event winners for the CMU women.
Werner broke a 9-plus year old school record in the 500-yard freestyle, posting an altitude-adjusted and NCAA Division II-leading time of 4:21.43 to win that event by 9.9 seconds on Saturday. His time broke Sam Bryant's former Mavericks standard of 4:23.13 by 1.7 seconds and gives him a 2.54-second lead over current teammate
Titouan Bernot on this year's national top times list.
Werner also dominated the 1,000 free by 10.55 seconds with a converted time of 9:13.99, nearly 39 seconds under the NCAA "B" cut standard. He continues to rank second nationally in that event at 9:03.24, trailing only 2026 NCAA D-II Swimmer of the Year Jacob Hamlin of Tampa, who is third behind Werner and Bernot in the 500 free.
Kelly won the women's 100 free at Denver, posting a NCAA "B" cut time of 51.11 seconds (altitude-adjusted). She also posted another "B" cut time of 55.59 seconds to finish second in the 100 fly after helping the Mavs set a NCAA qualifying time of 1:41.20 in the 200 medley relay.
Her 100 free time ranks her second in the RMAC and 11
th nationally this season. She leads the RMAC and ranks tenth in the 100 fly. CMU is ranked third nationally in the 200 medley relay.
Lence led the Mavericks in both diving events against Denver and beat a combined seven Pioneers as she won the 3-meter competition with a RMAC-best score of 245.55 points from six dives. She also took second on the 1-meter with a score of 237.68 points.
The Mavericks will continue their season on Friday, taking on more Division I opponents in Utah and UNLV in a double dual in Salt Lake City and the Ute Natatorium.
Both CMU teams are ranked second nationally, according to the CSCAA Top 25 Rankings.
