SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – The Colorado Mesa women's golf team is off to a dazzling start at the Westminster Wasatch Invite at Glenmoor Golf Club as the first round closed out this afternoon (Sept. 25) with the team sitting in second place among 12 total teams.
 
The Mavericks shot an 8-over, 296 in their opening round which is tied for the third best single round team score in program history. They trail only Tampa in the team scoring by four strokes and lead RMAC stalwart Colorado Christian by four strokes and fourth-place Sonoma State by 16 strokes.
 
Cassidy Phelan and Crystle Querol are currently at even par, 72 and are in second place on the individual leaderboard.
 
Phelan made five birdies in her round paired with five bogeys. She opened her round on the back nine and played it to 1-over before heading to the front side where she rattled off three straight birdies and played the side to 1-under.
 
Querol had three birdies and three bogeys in her round and had the same success as her teammate on the front side playing it to 2-under.
 
Elly Walters finished her round at 1-over, 73 and is in a tie for fifth place.
 
Sadie Kelley shot a 79 to finish as the Mavericks fourth golfer. Kelley made an eagle, three on the par-5, No. 5 and paired it with one birdie on No. 13.
 
Tampa's Ana Maria Jimenez Rios finished her round at 1-under, 71 to lead the tournament.
 
The second round will tee off tomorrow morning at approximately 8:30am.
