DENVER, Colo. – Sophomore
Cassidy Phelan led the Colorado Mesa women's golf team to a seventh-place finish at The Swan Memorial on Tuesday (Sept. 13) afternoon at Todd Creek Golf Course.
Phelan was magnificent on Tuesday out on the course. She shot the low round of the day at 3-under, 69 where she carded seven birdies, two bogeys and a double in the round. Her round started out a bit slow as she doubled her second hole (No. 11) then played her next 11 holes to 5-under with five birdies against six pars.
She finished the tournament with 13 birdies and shot 7-under on the par-5s that tied for the tournament best. Phelan finished in a tie for second place with a 6-over, 222.
Senior
Elly Walters also had one of her best days as a Maverick golfer on Tuesday. The Rifle native fired a 1-under, 71 to finish in a tie for 10
th place on the individual leaderboard. She played her final nine holes of the tournament to that 1-under par with two birdies and a bogey while climbing 10 spots on the leaderboard.
Midwestern State's Tristan Gabbard won the individual medalist honor by firing a 2-over, 218 for the tournament.
Colorado Mesa finished in seventh place on the team leaderboard, up one spot from where they finished yesterday. They finished 12 strokes behind tied for fifth Cameron and Biola and five shots up on RMAC preseason favorite UCCS.
Colorado Christian won the overall team title with a three-round score of 39-over, 903. The Cougars, also the tournament hosts, bested second-place Midwestern State by four strokes.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday September 24 as they travel to Salt Lake City for the Wasatch Invitational.
