DENVER, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's golf team opened their 2022-23 campaign in unorthodox fashion on Monday (Sept. 12) at The Swan Memorial at Todd Creek Golf Course and hosted by Colorado Christian University.
 
Like how the men typically play, the women played 36 holes on Monday and will add another 18 holes in tomorrow's final round.
 
Sophomore Cassidy Phelan led the Mavericks after day one after shooting a 9-over, 153 in her first two rounds and sits in a tie for ninth place. The returning RMAC Freshman of the Year shot a 2-over, 74 in her first round as she carded four birdies against six bogies. She closed out her first nine with two birdies on No. 17 and 18 before shooting 1-over on the front nine.
 
Round two wasn't as kind for the Las Vegas native as she shot a 7-over, 79. She had two birdies, seven bogeys and a double in her second 18 holes of the day. After going 6-over in her first nine of the round, she settled down and shot 1-over in her final nine of the day.
 
Senior Elly Walters is in a tie for 20^th place on the leaderboard after shooting 12-over, 156 in her two rounds. She shot a 3-over, 75 in her first round of the day and remained steady throughout the round with three birdies and six bogeys.
 
Like her teammate, the second round of the day didn't start off so hot. She tripled her second hole, the par 3, 190-yard No. 11, and finished the back nine 7-over but settled down in her second nine. She finished her final nine holes of the day just 2-over.
 
Colorado Mesa sits in a tie for eighth place on the team leaderboard with Chadron State and UCCS. They are ten strokes back of reaching the top five as Cameron is in fifth at 47-over, 623.
 
Colorado Christian leads the tournament at 22-over, 598 followed by Midwestern State at 34-over, 610.
 
The third and final round begins tomorrow morning at 9am.
