CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Colorado Mesa men's golf team began the 2022 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship on Easter Sunday (Apr. 17) at Whirlwind Golf Club.
After today's opening round, the Mavericks sit in seventh place on the team leaderboard with plenty of room to improve. They shot a 14-over, 302 and are seven strokes behind sixth place Colorado School of Mines with two rounds to play.
No. 25 CSU Pueblo leads the tournament after a 3-under, 285 in their opening round. They are two strokes ahead of second place Fort Lewis who is at 1-under.
Yael Chahin and
Timmy Cavarno led the Mavericks in the first round of the tournament as they both carded 2-over, 74s.
Chahin stayed steady throughout the round with three birdies, three bogeys and a double. The sophomore started out with an even par 36 in his front nine with two birdies and a double while the back nine had three bogeys and a birdie.
Cavarno, a freshman competing in his first conference tournament, had an up and down round but finished with a solid round. He had an eagle, four birdies, two bogeys, and two holes that went double or worse. Cavarno eagled hole No. 2 and finished his front nine 2-under.
CSU Pueblo's Andrew NI, ranked No. 25 by GolfStat, and Westminster's Zach Dallimore are tied for the tournament lead at 4-under.
The second round of the tournament is set to begin tomorrow morning.
