NEW ORLEANS— Twelve Colorado Mesa University track and field athletes combined to win 14 all-region honors, bestowed by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association this week.
The Maverick athletes were amongst the top five individuals or top three relay teams from the season-long performance lists in their respective events from the South Central Region, made up of the Rocky Mountain Athletic and Lone Star Conferences.
The Maverick men had six different all-region performers, including regional top performers
Gunner Rigsby in the triple jump and
Justin Thompson in the long jump. The six all-region awards are the most that the Maverick men have ever earned in a single season.
Dawson Heide (heptathlon),
Hayden Riley (shot put),
Tony Torres (mile) and
Elijah Williams (200 meters) were also recognized. All but Riley were selected to this week's NCAA Division II Championships in Pittsburg, Kansas.
Williams will also contest the 60 metes at the national meet, which begins Friday.
Thompson is now a 4-time all-region honoree, having won three previous honors in the high jump. Torres is now a 3-time honoree after having earned two honors in 2021 (indoor mile & outdoor 1,500). Rigsby was also a 2021 outdoor honoree while Heide, Riley and Williams are now first time all-region selections.
The Mavericks women also had six all-region performers, who combined to win eight total awards.
Sierra Arceneaux earned the honors in both the 200 meters and 4x400-meter relay and has now earned eight all-region plaudits over the last three combined indoor and outdoor seasons.
Mica Jenrette was also a 2-event honoree, claiming her fourth and fifth career certificates in the pentathlon and 4x400-meter relay. She is the only CMU women to be selected for this week's national meet and will contest the pentathlon.
Rachel Crutcher and
Sophie Lindauer were also all-region honorees in the 4x400-meter relay. RMAC high jump champion
Josie Coffey Kiana Jackson (triple jump) also received all-region honors.
Crutcher was a 60-meter all-region performer in 2021 while Lindauer earned honors in the high jump in 2021.
Coffey has now been an all-region performer in all three of her combined indoor and outdoor seasons as a Maverick while Jackson picked up her first career all-region honor this week.
