ALAMOSA, Colo.— Hunter Holcomb,
Ethan Points and
AJ Switzer all scored four goals to lead a dozen Colorado Mesa University Maverick goal-scorers in a comfortable 21-4 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's lacrosse win over the Adams State University Grizzlies here at the ASU Lacrosse Field.
The Mavericks claimed their third straight victory overall and moved to 25-0 all-time against the Grizzlies while also improving to 4-1 (2-0 RMAC) on the season.
The Mavericks out-shot the Grizzlies, who were playing their first official game of the season, 63-39 and won three-quarters (21) of the 28 faceoffs in what was their most lop-sided game of the campaign to date.
Holcomb and Points both had an assist as well and finished with five offensive points each. Meanwhile,
Carson Schwark scored two goals while
James Steinke tallied three points with a goal and two helpers.
JJ Brummett,
Dalton Goodale,
Trent Pernell,
Drew Eickelman,
Carter Compton and
Gavin Wallace also scored goals in the victory.
Jake Brummett won 15 of his 17 face-offs and finished with a game-high eight ground balls. The Mavericks also recorded 21 caused turnovers as
Jake Eickelman,
Riley Fisher,
Trey Corkin III and
Joey Grzetic IV all finished with two each.
Freshman
Reece Sullivan made five saves in the first three quarters to pick up the goalkeeping win while
Calvin Doucette played the fourth quarter for CMU.
The Grizzlies scored the first goal on the opening possession just 31 second into the game before two goals by Switzer and two by Holcomb gave the Mavericks a 4-1 with 7:13 left in the quarter. The Mavs then extended the lead to 7-2 with goals by Switzer,
Drew Eickelman and Holcomb in the opening 90 seconds of the second quarter before later building the lead to 9-3 at the half.
The Mavs then went on to score all five of the goals of the third quarter to increase the lead to 14-3.
After Jacob Austin scored for ASU to begin the fourth, the Mavericks went on to score each of the final seven goals of the game with reserve players getting extended playing time. Points, a freshman, had four of those markers to record his first career hat-trick in the final quarter alone. Goodale, Wallace and Compton also scored. The goals were the first of the season for Goodale and Compton and was the first of Compton's collegiate career as well.
Switzer, who led all players with 12 shots, recorded his third hat-trick of the young season and leads the Mavericks and the RMAC with 12 goals. Holcomb has now scored in all five games this season and recorded his first hat-trick of the campaign. He has nine goals on the season and now leads the RMAC with 20 points.
ASU goalkeeper Brendan Williams made 18 saves while Mason Anderson scored twice to lead the Grizzlies' offensive attack.
The Mavs were also strong on special teams, scoring two man-up goals on seven Grizzly penalties while successfully killing each of their five penalties.
The Mavericks continue their season later this month with a 4-game trip to Florida, beginning Mar. 16 at Palm Beach Atlantic.
