Mavs claim fourth straight victory with 14-10 triumph in Florida trip opener

Schwark, Steinke record hat-tricks

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.— Carson Schwark, James Steinke and AJ Switzer combined for nine goals as the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks won their fourth straight game by a 14-10 margin over host Palm Beach Atlantic University on Wednesday evening here at the Sailfish.

The Mavericks, who improved to 5-1 overall, jumped out to a 4-1 lead and led 9-3 late in the second quarter before the Sailfish went on a 5-1 run to pull within 10-8 at the end of the third.

Steinke, Schwark and Sergio Pelayo then combined for four fourth-quarter goals to help put the game away.

Schwark finished the game with four goals as he moved into a tie for seventh in program-history for career goals (61).  He also matched his single-game career-high for goals.

Steinke also finished with four points as he netted three goals while assisting on Pelayo's goal, the last of the game, with 2:41.  The hat-trick was his first of the season and allowed him to extend his goal-scoring streak to seven games over the past two seasons.

Switzer added two goals and continues to pace the team and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with 14 this season.

Pelayo and Braden Lowe had two assists each to aid in the victory.

The Mavs finished with a 45-38 advantage in total shots and had a 28-14 advantage at the half before the Sailfish (4-3) took 24 in the second half.

CMU freshman net-minder Reece Sullivan made nine saves to earn his fifth win of the season.

The Mavs again won the face-off battle winning 18 of the 28 total draws.  Dylan Checketts, was 17-for-26.  Checketts also had eight groundballs as the Mavericks finished with a 35-31 advantage in that category.

Drew Eickelman, who scooped up four ground balls, and Riley Fisher finished with three caused turnovers.

The start of game was delayed for approximately 90 minutes due to lightning.

The Mavs did not let that bother them as Switzer and Schwark both scored in the opening 2 ½ minutes before Austin Evans scored one of his three goals for the Sailfish with 7:48 to go in the opening quarter.

However, Switzer and Drew Eickelman scored to put the Mavs up 4-1 before another Evans goal cut the gap to 4-2 with just ten seconds left in the opening quarter.

Steinke, Trent Pernell, Jed Brummett and Micah Payton then all scored in the first seven minutes of the second quarter to make the score 8-3 before Schwark added another goal with 1:58 to give the Mavericks their largest lead at 9-3 with 1:58 to go in the first half.

The Sailfish then scored three straight goals to close within 9-6 before Schwark temporarily stopped the run with a goal on a Trevor Nelson assist with 10:44 left in the third.

Henry Sloyan and Evans then scored to make it 10-8 before the Mavs saw out the victory in the fourth quarter.

The Mavericks, tied for 20th in this week's USILA/Dynamic NCAA Division II Top 20 Coaches' Poll, will continue their 4-game trip through Florida on Saturday when they take on No. 2 and undefeated Tampa.
