Career Synopsis: Finished second in program history for faceoff winning percentage (.676) and groundballs (370) as one of the most decorated Mavericks in the history of the program for both on field and academic awards… Also had three of the top five groundball seasons in program history as well as two of the top three single-season faceoff winning percentage marks.
2024 (Senior): Earned Second Team All-RMAC honors after recording 141 faceoff wins and 84 groundballs… Was second in the RMAC for both categories… Had a .613 faceoff winning percentage on 230 attempts… Played in 16 games, making 15 starts… Scored five goals while registering three assists… Took 15 shots, 11 of which were on goal… Caused three turnovers… Named to the RMAC All-Tournament Team for the third straight year after winning 29 of 38 draws while winning 21 groundballs to help lead the Mavs to the title… Had a season-high 12 in the semifinal win over Adams State… Also won Apr. 22 RMAC Defensive Player of the Week honors… Continued to receive academic awards as the most honored Maverick in program history… Was voted to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America teams for the third straight year… Earned first team honors for the second straight season… Was also selected to the RMAC All-Academic First Team for the third straight year.
2023 (Junior): Recorded another statistical dominant and award-winning season… Was named as the College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-America of the Year for Men’s At-Large Sports as the very top student-athlete in ten Division II Men’s Sports that do not have their own Academic All-America program… Was a First Team Academic All-American as well, making joint history with teammate Jed Brummett as the initial first team honorees in program history… Also became the program’s first 2-time Academic All-American after earning third team honors for the 2021-22 academic year… Was also named to the Academic All-District squad for the second straight year… Also tabbed as the RMAC Academic Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and was the RMAC Summit Award Winner for the second consecutive time after holding the top GPA (4.00) of any player at the RMAC Tournament… Also shined on the field, earning USILA Honorable Mention All-America and Third Team All-South Central Region honors for the second consecutive year for his work at the “X”… Named as a Second Team All-American by the USA Lacrosse Magazine, becoming the first Maverick to ever that plaudit… Selected to the First Team All-RMAC squad for the second consecutive year… Won 229 of his 347 face-off battles… Ranked fifth in the country with his .660 winning percentage while leading CMU to a .671 team winning percentage, the second best mark in the country… Led the conference with 113 ground balls while ranking first in the league and 18th nationally with his 6.28 per game average… His 113 groundballs are the fourth most in program-history… Played in all 18 of the Mavs’ games… Scored five goals while assisting on another… Took 14 shots, eight of which were on goal… Named to the RMAC All-Tournament Team for the second straight year… Won 11 of his 12 draws in a May 4 semifinal win over Adams State before scooping up 12 ground balls while winning a season-high 24 faceoffs (on 35 attempts) in the championship game against Westminster… Matched a career-high by recording 15 groundballs in a Mar. 3 win over Rockhurst… Claimed 16 face-off wins while losing just two draws against the Hawks en-route to his second of three consecutive RMAC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Mar. 6… Was also recognized on Mar. 1 and Mar. 13.
2022 (Sophomore): Had a brilliant award-winning campaign at the face-off “X” and in the classroom, highlighted by becoming just one of three Honorable Mention USILA All-Americans in program history… Also became the first program’s first USA Lacrosse Magazine Honorable Mention All-American… Was a Third Team USILA All-South Region pick… Named to the First Team All-RMAC squad after finishing second in the NCAA Division II statistics for face-off winning percentage (.724)… Won 231 of his 319 draws… Helped lead the Mavs to the NCAA Division II statistical title for team face-off winning percentage (.728)… Led the RMAC while finishing 15th in the national statistics for ground balls… Claimed 124 in total, good for a 7.29 per game average… The ground ball total was second best in program history while the average was the second-best mark in CMU lore… Finished the season with four goals, two assists and six points… Also took 20 shots, 10 of which were on goal… Went 28-for-39 on draws with 19 ground balls in the Mavs’ two RMAC Tournament wins to nab a spot on the All-Tournament team… Had 14 ground balls in the tournament title win over Westminster… Also had 14 against the Griffins in the RMAC-opener on Feb. 27 and another 14 at Florida Tech (Mar. 23)… Also had two 11 ground ball efforts… Won a season-high 26 faceoffs (out of 34) against Florida Tech and was 22-for-29 at the “X” against Westminster on Feb. 27… Won all 17 of his faceoffs on Apr. 16 at Rockhurst… Wan named as the RMAC Defensive Player of the Week on three separate occasions (Mar. 2, Mar. 28, May 2)… Also had a multitude of academic awards at both the conference and national level… Was tabbed as the RMAC Academic Player of the Year by a vote of the conference’s sports information directors, becoming the first Maverick men’s lacrosse player to receive the plaudit… Received the RMAC Summit Award for having the highest GPA of any student-athlete at the conference tournament (4.00).. Was one of the Mavs’ six RMAC All-Academic First Team picks… Would later be named as a CoSIDA Academic All-American for Men’s At-Large Sports… Earned third team honors as just the second CMU men’s lacrosse player to earn such an award… Had earned a spot on the national ballot as just the third Maverick lacrosse player to receive CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, again for Men’s At-Large sports.
2021 (Freshman): Named as the RMAC Freshman of the Year after claiming a conference-leading 78 face-off wins… Also led the RMAC with his .716 face-off winning percentage (78-109)… The percentage is also second best in Maverick history behind only Cole Emmanuel’s 2020 partial-season mark of .759… Also led the RMAC with 49 ground balls while ranking second behind teammate Emmanuel in ground balls per game (4.45)… Ranked seventh in CMU history for a single season with that ground ball total and sixth for his per game average… Played in 11 games and was credited with four stats… Had a career-high 15 ground balls in an Apr. 2 win at Westminster after going 19-26 at the “X” against the Griffins… Lost just four faceoffs in his final five games.
Prep: 2019 First Team All-State midfielder and face-off man for the Herriman High School Mustangs… Was a state positional MVP… Led the state in face-off percentage Graduated in 2020.
Personal: Is majoring in business economics… Son of Matt and Wendy Checketts... Enjoys mountain biking and BMX.
