Swim/Dive: Saturday Prelims Report

GREENSBORO, N.C.— The 2022 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships continued on Saturday morning here at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks were represented in seven swimming events, which had preliminary heats on Saturday morning, by 13 different swimmers.  They will have four in the championship finals as Ben Sampson broke his own school-record in the 200-yard backstroke.

The Mavericks also advanced Jolynn Harris to the women's 1-meter diving final and had two other team-point scoring finishes from Ali Lange and Kyra Apodaca.

Here is a brief update on the Mavs' performances.  A full recap will be posted on Saturday night following the finals session, which begins at 6 p.m. EST (4 p.m. Mountain).

Women's 100 Freestyle

Davy Brown finished in a tie for 20th place in the preliminaries with a time of 50.99 seconds.  Kelsea Wright tied for 52nd in 52.87 seconds.

Men's 100 Freestyle

Kuba Kiszczak finished 34th in a career-best 44.78 seconds to move up into the No. 6 spot in program.  Matheus Laperriere was just behind, tying for 35th in 44.93 seconds.

Women's 200 Backstroke

After breaking her own school-record three times in the 100 back on Thursday and Friday, Lauren White set a personal-best of 1:59.30 to qualify eighth for the championship finals.  White took fourth in the 100 back on Friday night.

Katerina Matoskova finished 18th in qualifying with a time of 2:01.07 and will be the second alternate for the consolation finals.  Sarah Fillerup also competed for the first time this week, placing 32nd in 2:05.60.

Men's 200 Backstroke

Ben Sampson broke his own school-record with a time of 1:42.37 to earn the second seed for the evening's championship final.  He has now set new school-records in six events during the NCAA Championships while matching another.  He finished fourth in the 100 back on Friday night.

Women's 100 Breaststroke

Lily Borgenheimer qualified first with a time of 2:11.34.  She was the top seed coming and has now reached the championship final in each of her four individual events this week.

Men's 100 Breaststroke

Mahmoud Elgayar finished 19th with a season-best time of 1:59.67.  Teammate Matt Barrett was 26th in 2:04.79.

Men's 1650 Freestyle
Gavin Anderson turned in a time of 15:53.87 and stands in 13th place after the preliminary session.  Jacob Troescher is in 17th place with a time of 15:58.20.  The top eight seeds will compete during the finals session.  The times from that heat will then be compared to the earlier swims to determine final places.

Women's 1000 Freestyle


Amelia Kinnard will compete in the evening heat as the fourth seed.  Her qualifying time from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships is 16:50.16.  Drury's Marina Amorim posted the morning session's fastest time of 17:01.56, which will be the time to beat for Kinnard and her fellow top-8 seeds.

Women's 1-Meter Diving

Jolynn Harris, the 2021 NCAA Division II runner-up reached her second championship final of the week and her second straight 1-meter final, placing seventh in the afternoon preliminaries with an 11-dive score of 399.00 points.  Ali Lange finished with 395.30 points and earned second team all-America honors.  Kyra Apodaca did the same with a 15th place finish after scoring 385.05 points.

Evening Representation

The evening finals session will begin at 6 p.m. EST (4 p.m. Mountain).  Here are the list of Mavericks who will compete.

Both Maverick teams are currently in fifth place in the team standings as they look to lock up their bet ever team finishes.  The Maverick men have a NCAA Championship program-record 200 points while the women have 168, also a program record.

Event #32- Women's 1650 Free- Amelia Kinnard will open up the championship final.
Event #36- Women's 200 Back- Lauren White will aim for her 15th career all-America honor as the No. 8 seed in the championship final.
Event #37- Men's 100 Back- Ben Sampson will gun for a national title as the No. 2 seed.
Event #38- Women's 100 Breast- Lily Borgenheimer will be the top seed as she hopes to claim a so far elusive national title in what will be her fourth and final individual event final of the week.
Event #40- Women's 1-Meter Diving- Jolynn Harris will enter the championship final after finishing seventh in the preliminary round.
Event #41- Women's 400 Free Relay- The Mavericks will be the seventh seed out of 21 teams with a time of 3:23.52 and will swim in the third and final heat of the event.
Event #42- Men's 400 Free Relay – The Maverick men will close out the meet as the 11th seed amongst 22 teams.  They have a seed time of 2:57.22 and will be in the middle of three heats.
