The No. 3 Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team will host one of the top junior college programs in No. 5 ranked Snow College in their final home dual of the season on Thursday at 6:00pm in Brownson Arena.
EARNING RECOGNITION
Redshirt junior
Marissa Gallegos was named the NWCA Region 5 Wrestler of the Month after going 6-0 in the month and winning the Maverick Open with a perfect 4-0 record. During the month, she was not scored on in any of her collegiate matches.
The Denver native also competed in the Bill Farrell Memorial International, a senior level national event at the New York Athletic Club. She was the runner-up at 55kg losing to a competitor from Canada in the final.
She is 8-0 on the season and is now 74-8 in her illustrious career.
FRESHMAN 43s
The Mavericks are blessed to have two solid freshman 143-pounders in
Jada Llamido and
Celina Cooke. Llamido started the season as the go-to at the weight and placed second at the Maverick Open. She is currently 6-1 on the season and wrestled last weekend at the Texas Tri-Dual. Her lone loss was to her teammate
Celina Cooke.
Cooke, currently ranked No. 8 at the weight, is 7-2 on the season with her two losses coming at the Missouri Valley Open to a pair of NAIA powers. Cooke defeated her teammate Llamido at the Maverick Open and won her lone match last weekend at the Texas Tri-Dual.
TWO TOUGH 130s
Just like at 143 pounds, Colorado Mesa has a pair of 130-pound wrestlers that could make noise not only during the season but on the national level. Freshman
Hailey Chapman and redshirt sophomore
Lizzie Miller have dominated the weight as they are a combined 21-5 on the season.
Chapman, ranked No. 6 at the weight, is 11-2 on the season with a win in the Maverick Open and a 4-2 record (one on criteria) in the prestigious Missouri Valley Open. She is 4-0 in duals, wrestling up at 136 pounds, and has five wins via fall.
Miller, a 2021 all-American at 123 pounds, is 10-3 on the year with a runner-up finish at the Maverick Open (lost to Chapman in the final). She is 34-19 in her career and has four wins by pin on the season.
SEASON DEBUT
Redshirt sophomore
Holly Beaudoin is scheduled to make her debut this week against Snow College. The 2022 all-American has battled injuries and other unforeseen circumstances this season en route to this point. The 136-pounder was 15-8 last season with a fifth-place finish at the West Coast Tournament of Champions and a sixth-place finish at the Grand View Open.
SCOUTING SNOW COLLEGE
Snow College is in their inaugural season as a women's wrestling program, and they have entered the fray as a force among junior college programs in the country. They are ranked No. 5 in the first-ever NJCAA Women's Wrestling Rankings and have a total of 14 wrestlers ranked among the top ten in their respective weights.
They are 0-2 in duals this year, losing to NAIA schools Eastern Oregon and Providence. They had their first open tournament champion at the Embry-Riddle Mile High Collegiate Open in Corrie Williams at 136 pounds.
Williams is ranked No. 3 at 136 pounds for the Badgers and is 7-6 on the season with all of her losses coming to either top-ranked NAIA wrestler Paige Respicio of Providence or Morgan Shines of Eastern Oregon.
ON THE HORIZON
The Mavericks have one more event prior to the NCAA mandated break. They will travel to Las Vegas to compete in the Desert Duals, an event that is in its second year for women and hosted by Wartburg College. The schedule is yet to be determined at this time.
