ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Colorado Mesa women's golf team opened their final tournament of the fall on Monday (Oct. 17) morning as they play the Nick Turner Invitational at Arroyo del Oso Golf Course, hosted by Fort Lewis College.
The Mavericks are in seventh place in the 15-team tournament after firing an opening round 18-over, 306 on Monday. Four nationally ranked team are all in front of the Mavericks by less than 10 strokes including #38 Arkansas Fort Smith who is just one stroke ahead. They are squarely ahead of five other RMAC schools who are competing in the tournament.
Cal State San Marcos leads the tournament after a 5-over, 293.
Elly Walters leads three Mavericks that sit inside the top-20 on the individual leaderboard. Walters opened the tournament with a 2-over, 74 after recording two birdies and four bogeys in her 18 holes. She shot an even-par, 36 on her front-nine before a 2-over, 38 on the back and is currently in a tie for eighth.
Crystle Querol is in a tie for 14
th on the individual leaderboard after a first round of 3-over, 75. She had one birdie and four bogeys in her round.

Cassidy Phelan ranked No. 83 in the initial GolfStat rankings, is in a tie for 19
th after an opening round of 4-over, 76.
Cal State San Marcos' Caroline Wales leads the individual leaderboard with a 2-under, 70 in her opening round.
The second and final round will be tomorrow and tees off around 8:30am.
