Walters, Mavericks Finish in Second at Samuel Proal Invite

PUEBLO, Colo. – Senior Elly Walters shot a 2-over, 74 to help lead the Colorado Mesa women's golf team to a second-place finish at the Samuel Proal Invitational at Pueblo Country Club on Tuesday (Oct. 11) afternoon.

The Rifle native finished in second place all by herself in the tournament after firing another round of 74 to finish at 148. Like her first round, she bogeyed the first three holes of the day before settling in and scoring a birdie on the No. 4, par-4.

She finished the round shooting 1-over on each side of the course and had four birdies and six bogeys. Walters tied for the best in the tournament on the par-5 holes, shooting 3-under on them all while leading the tournament with eight birdies.

Cassidy Phelan finished in a tie for 12th place on the leaderboard with a 10-over, 82 while Brittlynn O'Dell shot matching 80s to finish in a tie for 14th in their final rounds.

Colorado Mesa finished in second place in the team standings after firing a 50-over, 626 in their two team rounds. They were able to charge ahead of UCCS and held off the Mountain Lions late to best them by six strokes.

Tournament host CSU Pueblo won the team title with a 605-team score.

The Mavericks will close out the fall season next weekend when they travel to Albuquerque, N.M. for the Nick Turner Classic hosted by Fort Lewis.
