Thompson ties for tenth at weather-plagued NCAA meet

ALLENDALE, Mich.— Competing in weather conditions that featured temperatures in the 40s and high winds, Colorado Mesa University high jumper Justin Thompson finished in a tie for tenth at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships.  Thompson was the only Maverick competing on Day 2 of the 3-day meet, which runs through Saturday here on the campus of Grand Valley State University.

The Carbondale, Colorado native cleared 2.00 meters (6 feet, 6 ¾ inches) on his second attempt at that height, the opening height for the field of 13 before going out at 2.05 meters (6-8.75).

Texas A&M-Commerce's Ushan Perera won the competition with a clearance of 2.17 meters (7-1.5) edging two other jumpers on tie-breaking procedures.

The Mavericks will have four athletes compete on Saturday in women's high jumper Josie Coffey, men's triple jumpers Gunner Rigsby and Spencer Purnell and men's 1,500-meter runner Tony Torres.
