PUEBLO, Colo.— Elijah Williams turned in the fastest all-conditions 200-meter time in Maverick history while
Hayden Riley finished fifth in the discus throw to lead the Colorado Mesa University men's outdoor track and field team, which advanced four combined runners to Sunday's finals in the three preliminary-round events that were contested on Saturday, the second of three days of action, here at the 2021 Rocky Mountain Athletic Championships.
Riley's finish, which came thanks to a toss of 46.22 meters (151-8) gave the Mavericks four more team points putting their total at 18 through five scored events with the final event of the decathlon to come later Saturday evening. That total is good for sixth place thus far.
Teammate
Brock Murphy, the RMAC hammer throw champion on Friday, finished 14
th on Saturday with a discus throw effort of 40.46 meters (132-9) on his third attempt. He had fouled on his first two attempts.
Meanwhile in the running event preliminaries, the Mavericks qualified two men for the 200-meter final and one in each the 800 meters and 110-meter hurdles.
In the 200,
Elijah Williams was the top overall qualifier as he won his heat in a wind-aided and NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time of 21.28 seconds. Williams set the wind-legal school record of 21.56 earlier this season. His time on Saturday, completed with a +2.6-meter-per-second wind, was 0.28 seconds faster than any of the other man in the 21-man field.
Teammate
Jeremiah Wilson was in the same heat and qualified seventh for Sunday's 9-man final in 21.94 seconds as he moved into the fourth position in Maverick history.
Eliot Ward (22.16) and
Beau Thornton (22.29) also set PRs as also hold down spots in the Mavericks' all-time top 10.
In the hurdles, freshman
Zayden Davis qualified fifth in 14.93 seconds while
Kevin Frye turned in a career-best of 15.53 seconds to take the No. 7 spot in CMU history. He finished 11
th.
In the 800,
Tony Torres continued his strong season with a PR and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:51.19. He continues to rank second in Maverick history. Torres, who also safely advanced to the finals in the 1,500 meters, finished fourth overall and second in his preliminary heat.
