Box Score 2 DENVER— The Colorado Mesa University men's & women's tennis teams both won the doubles point but dropped all of the singles matches as they were downed by PacWest Conference and in-state rival MSU Denver by identical 6-1 scores on Friday here at the Roadrunner's Regency Athletic Complex.
The Maverick men, who were playing their first official match in a month, fell to 6-6 while the Roadrunners improved to 5-9.
CMU's women slipped to 7-10 while the Roadrunners moved to 9-9.
In doubles play, the Mavericks men claimed wins in the No. 1 and 2 flights.
Christian Albrechtsen and
Tyler Landen scored a 6-1 win over Mateo Besada and Daniel Llorente in the top flight while
Steven Howe and
Jandre van Wyk claimed a 6-3 decision over Jack McDermott and Jenaloup Auzias.
However, the Roadrunners claimed five of the six singles matches in straight sets to take the dual victory. Landen was the lone Maverick to push his singles match to three sets as he won the opening set over Alejandro Martinez-Morilla at No. 3 in a tie-breaker, 11-9. Martinez-Morilla then won the second set with a 7-4 tie-breaker score before taking the third set, 6-1.
Steven Howe also lost his second set at No. 2 in a tie-breaker, 7-4, against McDermott.
In the women's match, the Mavericks claimed victories in the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches, both with 7-5 scores, to seize the early team lead.
Issy Coman and
Halle Romero took down Helena Steenberg and Lilly Stienemeier at No. 2 while
Lauren Thomas and
Julianna Campos won their No. 3 affair over Marie Cool and Gala Castello.
In singles, the Roadrunners won the No. 1-5 matches in straight sets although Coman battled with MSU Denver standout Brooklyn Ross, before going down 6-4, 7-5. Meanwhile, Campos split 6-2 sets with Cool at No. 6 singles before the Roadrunner won the match tie-breaker, 10-7.
The Mavericks will have little time to dwell on the set-backs as they continue a busy weekend of matches on the front range on Saturday. CMU will be in Colorado Springs to face Austin College in 9:30 a.m. neutral-court matches before facing the host Colorado College Tigers at 2:30 p.m. on CC's Burghart Tennis Courts.
