As a Redshirt Junior (2022-23): Had an award-winning season to cap his Maverick career… Posted a winning 10-7 singles record while co-leading the squad in total (20) and doubles (10) wins… Was 10-11 in doubles earning Third Team All-PacWest honors with partner Tyler Landen… Became the first Maverick tennis player in the program’s 3-year stint in the PacWest to be a 2-time all-conference doubles selection… Had an 8-10 doubles mark in dual meets, going 4-5 at No. 1 and 4-4 at No. 2… Had a solid 9-5 dual mark in singles, playing mostly in the No. 5 (3-4) and No. 6 (3-1) spots while going a combined 3-0 in spot starts at No. 3 and 4… Received three academic awards begin selected to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® team… Was also named to the Academic All-PacWest squad for the third straight year as the only Mav to accomplish that feat… Was also named as an ITA Scholar-Athlete for the fourth straight year, again a Maverick first.
As a Redshirt Sophomore (2021-22): Claimed 15 official victories… Was tied for the team lead with nine doubles victories… Also went 6-13 in singles play, posting a 5-10 record in duals… Was the regular at No. 5 singles, going 5-7 in that flight… Also saw limited time at No. 4 and 6 singles… Played doubles with partners Tegan Hartman and Steven Howe… Played with Hartman during the fall and early spring, going 5-6 overall, including a 3-4 dual meet record… The pair also reached the quarterfinals of the ITA West Regional… Teamed with Howe in the final months of the season, going 4-9… Was 4-8 with him at No. 2 doubles alongside a spot start at No. 1... Selected as an ITA Scholar-Athlete for the third straight year... Named to the Academic All-PacWest team for the second straight season.
As a Redshirt Freshman (2021): Paced the team with 25 wins… Co-led the team in doubles going 15-4 with partner Steven Howe to earn Third Team All-PacWest honors… The duo also set a new Maverick record for single-season doubles winning percentage (.789)… The pair won nine of their final ten matches… They were 11-4 at No. 2 doubles while also posting a 3-0 mark at No. 1 and a 1-0 mark at No. 3… Was tied for the team lead in singles with a 10-8 record… Was 3-0 at No. 4 and 7-8 at No. 5… Named as the PacWest Player of the Week on Mar. 16 after winning both of his matches in a 4-3 home win over Dallas Baptist after moving up a rung to No. 4 singles and No. 1 doubles for that Mar. 9 dual… He was the first Maverick man to ever earn that honor… Named to the Academic All-PacWest team… Also selected as an ITA Scholar-Athlete for the second straight year.
As a Freshman (2020): Enrolled at CMU and joined the team in December... Posted a 2-4 singles record and 0-1 doubles record in the COVID-19 shortened spring season... Played in the No. 5 and 6 spots in singles, going 1-2 at each flight... Partnered with Moises Cure in his lone doubles match, played at the No. 3 spot against Holy Names... Named as an ITA Scholar-Athlete.
Prep: Graduated from Hoërskool Waterkloof in December of 2018... Was coached by Gerrie Dippenaar... The team was ranked in South Africa's top three in both 2017 and 2018.
Personal: Is majoring in biochemistry... Son of Mari and Waldo van Wyk... Has two siblings (Luke & Miné)... Says his ultimate dream is to work for a company like SpaceX or NASA and explore a little more of the unknown... Is an outdoor person who loves going on hikes and camping... Says "Whether I am at the beach or in the wild, I just love experiencing nature."Â Also enjoys spending time with my friends.
Why I Chose CMU: "CMU for one has a big variety of degrees and opportunities to study in your desired field. Not only does CMU have an amazing academic record, but also an amazing athletic program. Besides all that is on paper CMU has one of the most beautiful campuses I have seen."
