INDIANAPOLIS— The Colorado Mesa University track and field team qualified an indoor-program record seven student-athletes for next week's NCAA Division II Championships in Birmingham, Alabama it was announced on Tuesday afternoon by the NCAA Division II Track & Field Committee.
The Mavericks qualified three individual women plus the 4x400-meter relay team, which includes two of those individuals. The CMU men qualified
Justin Thompson in the high jump and
Tony Torres in the mile. Both men will be making their NCAA Division II Championship debuts as will women's high jumper
Josie Coffey and pentathlete
Mica Jenrette, who were a little more on the selection bubble than the rest of their teammates.
Jenrette will then join with
Sierra Arceneaux, who was selected as an individual in the 200-meter dash,
McKenna Molder and
Jill Payne on the Mavs' relay team at the Mar. 11-13 meet at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Molder will also be making her national meet debut while Arceneaux and Payne were members of the Maverick's 2019 national qualifying 4x100-meter relay team during the outdoor campaign.
This relay selection marks the first time in indoor history that the Mavericks have qualified a relay squad.
The team posted a school-record setting time of three minutes, 52.62 seconds to win the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title on Sunday. Their track-size and altitude-adjusted time of 3:50.02 is good for the sixth seed.
Arceneaux will be seeded seventh in the 200 with her converted time of 24.38 seconds after she won the RMAC title on Sunday with a flat time of 24.68 to rank second in program history.
Jenrette set a school-record score of 3,560 points on Friday to win at the RMAC Championships and was the last of ten women selected for the national meet in the pentathlon with her converted score of 3,582 points.
Coffey was also won of the final four women selected in the high jump with her season-best clearance of 1.72 meters. She also won that event and is tied for 11
th coming into the national meet.
Torres is the highest seeded Maverick at No. 5 in the mile with his converted time of 4:04.39. He won the RMAC title on Friday with his flat time of 4:10.91 before setting school-records in the distance medley relay and 3,000 meters later in the RMAC Championships.
Thompson is tied for the No. 6 seed in the high jump with his personal-best clearance of 2.11 meters (6-11). He also won the RMAC title on Saturday.
