INDIANAPOLIS— The Colorado Mesa University football, men's & women's soccer and volleyball teams all continued to sit in the latest NCAA Division II Regional Rankings, released this week by the various sport committees.
Those rankings will eventually determine the at-large selections and seeding for the regional championship tournaments and playoffs that begin later this month.
The Maverick volleyball team remained in the No. 6 spot of this week's rankings while the women's soccer, men's soccer and football teams all slipped slightly to the No. 6, 7 and 10 spots, respectively.
Volleyball
The Maverick volleyball team (19-5 overall)
and the rest of the top six in the South Central Regional Rankings held steady after last Wednesday's set of initial rankings.
It is worth noting that CMU's Tuesday night win over Westminster is not yet included in the rankings, which evaluated matches played through Sunday.
National poll No. 1 MSU Denver continues to lead the regional rankings while the Colorado School of Mines, which defeated the Mavericks last Saturday, is still second.. Angelo State is still third while
Regis, which comes to Brownson Arena to face the Mavs on Friday night, is still fourth. Texas-Tyler, co-leaders of the LSC with Angelo State, is still fifth.
Lubbock Christian moved up two spots to seventh after defeating West Texas A&M, which slid a spot to eighth, last weekend. CSU Pueblo also dropped a spot to ninth while Texas A&M-Commerce remained in the No. 10 spot.
The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and Lone Star Conferences both have five teams in the rankings.
A total of eight teams will eventually be selected for the region's portion of the NCAA Tournament. The RMAC and LSC Tournament winners receive automatic berths while the other six will be selected at large from the two conferences based on the regional rankings, which will be updated one more time next Wednesday before the Monday, Nov. 22 selection show, which will air on 5:30 p.m. MST on
www.ncaa.com.
Women's Soccer
After a 1-1 week that included a RMAC Tournament quarterfinal win over Fort Lewis on Sunday,
the Mavericks fell three spots to sixth in this week's South Central Regionals rankings.
The Mavericks, 14-3 overall and 14-2 in in-region play,
will host eighth-ranked Regis in a RMAC Tournament semifinal on Wednesday night (6 p.m.) at Community Hospital Unity Field. The winner will play the winner of the other semifinal between second-ranked UCCS and third-ranked Colorado School of Mines in the championship match.
Dallas Baptist University, which received a first round bye in the LSC Tournament, continues to lead the regional rankings ahead of UCCS, which moved up two spots after sharing the RMAC regular-season title with the Mavs. The Mountain Lions went 2-0 last week.
Mines is now ranked third despite an 0-1-1 week. The Orediggers had been ranked second last week.
Midwestern State moved up three spots from seventh to fourth in the rankings. However, the Mustangs, who were seeded second in the LSC Tournament were upset on Tuesday night in the quarterfinals by Texas A&M-Commerce, a result that is not yet included in the ranking process.
Westminster, which defeated the Mavs in overtime last Wednesday night, also moved up three spots to fifth in this week's rankings. The Griffins then played to an official tie against Mines in the RMAC Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday but saw their conference tournament run stopped by the Orediggers in the penalty kick shootout. Their tournament selection resume is also complete.
Texas Woman's was ranked fifth in the initial set of rankings and slipped two spots to seventh in Wednesday's release. The Pioneers were then defeated by Angelo State in the LSC Tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday. Angelo State was ranked sixth in the initial set of the rankings, but was not included in the top-8 this week.
DBU will play West Texas A&M in the first LSC Tournament semifinal on Friday while Angelo State will take on Texas A&M-Commerce in the other.
The RMAC and LSC Tournament winners will receive automatic selections into the NCAA Tournament and will be joined by four at-large selections from the two conferences.
The selections will be officially announced on Monday at 4 p.m. MST, again at
www.ncaa.com.
Men's Soccer
The Mavericks won their only game of last week, a RMAC Tournament semifinal against Regis on Sunday,
but dropped to seventh in Super Region 4 rankings, made up of schools from both the South Central and West Regions. The Mavericks, now 15-3-1 overall, will host eighth-ranked CSU Pueblo in the RMAC Tournament Championship match on Saturday at 5 p.m. with an automatic qualification spot on the line.
CSU Pueblo defeated third-ranked Colorado School of Mines in the other RMAC Tournament semifinal.
A total of ten teams from the Super Region will qualify for the NCAA Tournament with automatic spots going to the champions of the five conferences in the Super Region. The Pacific West Conference and Great Northwest Athletic Conference's representative are determined by the regular season standings while the LSC, RMAC and CCAA (California Collegiate Athletic Association) spots are awarded through the post-season tournaments.
Biola, ranked tenth in the rankings, and unranked Point Loma are currently tied for the top spot in the PacWest standings with 7-2 conference records. They both have one game remaining this week.
Hawai'i-Pacific, also unranked, is third in the standings with a 6-1-2 conference record and 20 points. Azusa Pacific, sixth in the rankings, is in fourth place with 19 points and a 6-1-1 PacWest record but has two games remaining, including a Sunday clash with Biola.
In the GNAC, Seattle Pacific and Western Washington are tied for the top spot in the standings with 17 points although Seattle Pacific (5-1-2 GNAC) does have two games remaining while Western Washington only has one, a Saturday contest at Simon Fraser, third in the standings with 15 points and a 5-4 record. Seattle Pacific is currently the only GNAC team in the rankings, checking in at the No. 9 spot.
The CCAA Tournament began last Sunday and continues this weekend in Los Angeles.
Top-seeded Cal State LA is ranked first in the region and will host 12
th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills in one semifinal. Fifth-ranked Cal Poly Pomona will take on 11
th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino in the other.
The Lone Star Conference tournament is also underway and still includes second-ranked Midwestern State and fourth-ranked West Texas A&M, who are in opposite semifinals as the top two seeds. They will play unranked St. Mary's and Lubbock Christian, respectively.
The selection show will be on Monday at 4:30 p.m. MST.
Football
Despite a 52-9 win over Black Hills State in their home finale last Saturday, the Maverick football team, now 7-2 overall,
slipped a spot to tenth in this week's Super Region Four Rankings, which were released for the third time on Monday.
Mines maintained the No. 1 spot while Angelo State moved up to No. 2 spot after a 30-3 win over Texas A&M-Commerce. Augustana slipped a post to third after being soundly defeated by seventh-ranked Minnesota-Duluth.
Bemidji State, Western Colorado and Central Washington are now ranked 4-6, respectively.
Midwestern State dropped to eighth after falling to West Texas A&M while Sioux Falls, the only 3-loss team in the super region, moved into the rankings at the No. 9 spot, one spot ahead of the Mavs.
A total of seven teams from the super region, made up of the RMAC, LSC, GNAC and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conferences, will be selected for the playoffs on Sunday.
The Mavs wrap up their regular season on Saturday at South Dakota Mines and will need a win --and likely help-- from around the Super Region to gain one of the seven spots.
