HURRICANE, Utah— The Colorado Mesa University women's triathlon team had six of the top seven NCAA Division II finishers and easily won their third straight Division II West Regional team title on Saturday afternoon here at Quail Creek State Park.
The Mavericks posted a team score of 71 points, easily out-distancing Drury (112) and Black Hills State (139) in the Division II portion of the standings of the Women's Collegiate Triathlon Western Regional Qualifier.
A total of 61 Division I, II and III athletes raced together on the 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer draft-legal bike, and 5k run course.
Redshirt freshman
Megan Buchanan led the Mavs for the second straight race as she completed the race in one hour, ten minutes and one second to finish 14th overall and second amongst Division II racers.
Abigail White as just 20 seconds behind in 1:10:21 to finish 16th.
Natalie Mitchell was CMU's third and Division II's fourth finisher in 1:10:42 while
Shannon Feran finished in 1:10.47. They were 18th and 19th overall and completed CMU's 4-person team score.
Paloma Suarez Davila (1:11.12) and
Hannah Croasdell (1:11.33) also managed top-25 finishes for CMU and were ahead of the next Division II finisher. They were 22nd and 23rd overall.
Drury's Jayme Vermaas was the top Division II finisher. She was 11th overall in 1:09.10. Her teammate Olivia Hall, who finished 25th (1:11.56) was two spots behind Croasdell to finally break up CMU's dominance.
Maverick
Emma Polenske also broke into the top 10 of Division II finishers. She was 32nd overall in 1:14.45.
CMU also had three other individuals compete, who did not figure into the team scoring.
Torin Lackmann led that group, taking 26th overall in 1:11.59.
Maddy Watkins (43rd, 1:22.00) and
Madison Batkiewicz (45th, 1:22.49) were the others.
The Mavericks will wrap up their 2021 season on Nov. 13 competing at the Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championships in Tempe, Arizona.
