GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks won the final six bouts, including each of the final three with pins, as they recorded a come-from-behind 32-13 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's wrestling dual over visiting and tenth-ranked Adams State University, Saturday here in Brownson Arena.
The dual lifted the lid on the conference portion of the season for both teams.
The Mavericks have now won three straight are now 3-2 overall while the Grizzlies suffered their first loss of the young season to fall to 2-1 overall. Both teams had gone 2-0 last Saturday at the Fort Hays State University Dual Jamboree in Hays, Kansas with wins over the host and 12
th-ranked Tigers and No. 23 Newman University.
Expectedly trailing 13-3 after each of the Grizzlies' three nationally-ranked wrestlers recorded victories in the opening four bouts, the Mavericks rallied as
Dylan Ranieri sparked the run with a key 8-3 win at 157 pounds over ASU's Dylan Udero.
The four returning national qualifiers in CMU's lineup then all posted convincing victories from 165-197 pounds before Maverick freshman
Gabe Carranza finished off the afternoon with his first collegiate pin, just 2:03 into his 285-pound match against ASU's Nathan Ellis, also a freshman.
That victory came on the heels of pins by
Nolan Krone (4:14) and
Donnie Negus (5:27) at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively. Krone, ranked seventh in the country, is now 5-0 on the year and has 75 career victories to his credit.
Earlier,
Fred Green gave up an early takedown but rallied for an 11-2 major decision win over previously unbeaten Grizzly freshman Aaden Valdez in the 165-pound match.
The Mavericks then went ahead for the first time, 14-13, as
Seth Latham dominated ASU's Cody Lewis by a 13-0 major decision margin in the 174-pound affair setting the stage for the Krone, Negus and Carranza pins that turned the dual into a lop-sided affair.
Marcos Magaña also had a key victory for the Mavericks, who won seven matches overall, as he won 6-3 at 141 pounds over Angel Flores. Magana was a late addition to the Maverick starting lineup and is now 2-2 on the season.
The Grizzlies' three match wins came from fifth-ranked 125-pounder Isaiah DeLaCerda, third-ranked 133-pounder and reigning RMAC Wrestler of the Week Jonathan Andreatta and seventh-ranked 141-pounder Noah Hermosillo.
CMU also won 12 of the 15 extra matches, contested in conjunction with the official dual.
Luke Grisafi and
Marcos Magaña were each 2-0.
The Mavericks will be on the road next week, wrestling at Chadron State on Thursday at 6 p.m. and at defending conference champion Colorado School of Mines at 1 o'clock on Saturday afternoon.
