Lange, relay squad lead Mavs on Day 1

GENEVA, Ohio— The Colorado Mesa University men's 200-yard medley relay team of Lane Austin, Mahmoud Elgayar, Pedro Terres Illescas and Felipe D'Orsi as well as sophomore women's diver Ali Lange both earned Honorable Mention All-America honors to lead the Colorado Mesa University swimming and diving teams' efforts on the first day of the NCAA Division II Championships on Wednesday here at the SPIRE Institute Aquatics Center.

The relay squad combined for a time of one minute, 28.60 seconds to place 14th while Lange finished 15th on the 3-meter board with 369.35 points on 11 dives during the afternoon preliminary session.

The relay effort netted the Mavericks six team points and has the CMU men in 18th place through four of 21 events.  CMU's women are tied for 27th with two team points through five women's events.

The men's relay team was the only representation the Mavericks had in the evening finals session.

In the morning, the Mavericks had five individual and 13 total swimmers in action.

Freshman Davy Brown got things underway as she finished 20th in the preliminaries of the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.62.  She had come into the meet, seeded 32nd.

Mahmoud Elgayar then posted a career-best time of 1:49.33 in the men's preliminaries to finish 19th and solidify his No. 3 ranking in program history.  He was seeded 26th coming in.

Austin then sprinted to a time of 20.48 seconds in the men's 50 free to finish 28th before the women's 200 medley relay squad of Sarah Fillerup, Samantha White, Brown and Maddie Pressler narrowly missed out on qualifying for the consolation final.  They finished 17th in 1:44.55, less than a tenth of a second off the school-record of 1:44.46, set at the 2019 RMAC Championships.

The men's relay squad, which included Bailey Usey as the anchor freestyle leg in the morning, then qualified 12th in 1:28.74.

In the 1,000-yard freestyle events, which were swum in sections against time, Isabelle Hansson finished 34th in her NCAA Championship debut with a time of 10:24.30.  Torsten Rau also finished 34th in the men's event with a time of 9:38.50.

Day 2 of the meet, which runs through Saturday, begins on Thursday at 10 a.m. EDT.
