GENEVA, Ohio— The Colorado Mesa University men's 200-yard medley relay team of
Lane Austin,
Mahmoud Elgayar,
Pedro Terres Illescas and
Felipe D'Orsi as well as sophomore women's diver
Ali Lange both earned Honorable Mention All-America honors to lead the Colorado Mesa University swimming and diving teams' efforts on the first day of the NCAA Division II Championships on Wednesday here at the SPIRE Institute Aquatics Center.
The relay squad combined for a time of one minute, 28.60 seconds to place 14
th while Lange finished 15
th on the 3-meter board with 369.35 points on 11 dives during the afternoon preliminary session.
The relay effort netted the Mavericks six team points and has the CMU men in 18
th place through four of 21 events. CMU's women are tied for 27
th with two team points through five women's events.
The men's relay team was the only representation the Mavericks had in the evening finals session.
In the morning, the Mavericks had five individual and 13 total swimmers in action.
Freshman
Davy Brown got things underway as she finished 20
th in the preliminaries of the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.62. She had come into the meet, seeded 32
nd.
Mahmoud Elgayar then posted a career-best time of 1:49.33 in the men's preliminaries to finish 19
th and solidify his No. 3 ranking in program history. He was seeded 26
th coming in.
Austin then sprinted to a time of 20.48 seconds in the men's 50 free to finish 28
th before the women's 200 medley relay squad of
Sarah Fillerup,
Samantha White, Brown and
Maddie Pressler narrowly missed out on qualifying for the consolation final. They finished 17
th in 1:44.55, less than a tenth of a second off the school-record of 1:44.46, set at the 2019 RMAC Championships.
The men's relay squad, which included
Bailey Usey as the anchor freestyle leg in the morning, then qualified 12
th in 1:28.74.
In the 1,000-yard freestyle events, which were swum in sections against time,
Isabelle Hansson finished 34
th in her NCAA Championship debut with a time of 10:24.30.
Torsten Rau also finished 34th in the men's event with a time of 9:38.50.
Day 2 of the meet, which runs through Saturday, begins on Thursday at 10 a.m. EDT.
