GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University senior
Brooke Doumer hit a walk-off RBI single in the first game and a drilled a 2-run insurance home run in the second to lead the Maverick softball team to come-from-behind 3-2 and 4-1 wins over visiting Chadron State College in their home and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the CMU Softball Stadium.
The Mavericks improved to 8-4 overall with the wins while the Eagles, who had taken the initial leads in both games on home runs, fell to 5-8.
Game 1
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the third inning as Addison Spears, who had laced a first-inning double, hit a home run to center in the third.
Meanwhile, Eagle freshman hurler DeAnna Barrera held the Mavericks at bay through five innings before Maverick all-American
AnnMarie Torres hit the first pitch of the bottom of the sixth inning over the scoreboard in left field putting the Mavericks on the board.
Hailey Hinson, who went 3-for-5 throughout the doubleheader, later delivered a 2-out single and moved to second on another single by
Jordyn Hays. Hinson then scored the game-tying run on a
Sarah Staudle RBI single.
Holding the Eagles to just one hit in the top of the seventh and five throughout the game, the Mavericks then used a 1-out double by
Lauren Wedman to set up Doumer's game-winning hit to center.
Maverick sophomore pitcher
Shea Mauser, the reigning RMAC Pitcher of the Week, earned the victory for the Mavs as she struck out five Eagles while giving up just five hits and two walks.
Barrera (3-4) took the loss after going the full 6 1/3 innings while giving up eight hits.
Game 2
The Eagles again took the early lead as Gabby Russell hit a second-inning home run to right putting her club up 1-0.
The Mavericks would again come from behind although they did not wait nearly as long.
In the bottom of the fourth, Torres drew a leadoff walk before being lifted for pinch runner
Taylor Tremelling.
Bailey Kleespies then hit a single as Tremelling moved to second. Freshman
Camryn Mullen then moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt before an RBI groundout by Staudle plated Tremelling to level the game at 1.
One play later, Hinson hit an RBI single up the middle to give the Mavs a 2-1 lead.
An inning later in the bottom of the fifth, Doumer blasted a 2-run shot to left after a 1-out walk to Wedman had set the table.
Meanwhile, Maverick junior
Paige Adair was in control from the circle. She made just her second start of the campaign and allowed just three hits while striking out six. Sixty-Nine of her 99 pitches throughout the afternoon were for strikes.
Tia Kohl (2-4) took the loss for the Eagles after giving up four hits and five walks.
Hinson was 2-for-3 in the game.
The two teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m.
