GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— A dozen swimmers from host Colorado Mesa University, the Colorado School of Mines and Western Colorado University gathered for the Mavericks' Long Course Invitational, which was contested on Tuesday afternoon at the El Pomar Natatorium, the site of this week's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships that begin Wednesday morning.
The swimmers, who swam 50-meter lengths, were attempting to post qualifying times for the U.S. Olympic Trials or their other various international aspirations.
A total of seven different events were contested.
In the closest race of the day, CMU sophomore
Mahmoud Elgayar out-touched Mines rival Peyton Scherschel in the 100-meter breaststroke by just two one-hundredths of a second. Elgayar finished in one minute 5.48 seconds while Scherschel touched in 1:05.50.
CMU's
George Durin also won the 50-yard freestyle in 30.90 seconds.
Zander Minano (25.05) and
Saif Ezzat Sayed (25.85) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Maverick freshman
Lauren White, the only CMU women's swimmer in the meet, finished second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:06.81.
