Mavericks dominate Senior Day dual to extend RMAC winning streak to 22

CMU led by three double-winners

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The nation's tenth-ranked Colorado Mesa University women's swimming team posted 12 official event wins and had the fastest times in three of the four others as they dominated visiting Western Colorado University to complete another perfect Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual season on Saturday afternoon here at the El Pomar Natatorium.

The Mavericks honored their six seniors prior to the dual and then went on to post a convincing 193-97 win as they finished the dual meet portion of their season with a 6-0 mark in conference duals while extending their conference dual-meet winning streak to 22.

That streak dates nearly four calendar years to Jan. 22, 2016, when they defeated the Mountaineers, 155-144.

CMU, which exhibitioned the final three events, also finishes this season with a winning 6-5 overall dual record.  All five losses were to NCAA Division I foes.

The Mountaineers fell to 6-4 overall and to 5-4 against RMAC foes.

The Mavericks were led by three 2-event individual winners in Brittany Dixon and Samantha White, two of the Mavericks' seniors, and sophomore Robyn Naze.

Senior Tally Danielson also touched first in the 100-yard butterfly while Ginger Bryant, Candice Rosen were part of CMU's winning 200-yard medley relay team to begin the meet.  Maggie Hellard was also recognized prior to the dual and competed as an exhibition swimmer in three events.

Dixon, a 4-time All-American, won both diving events with NCAA Division II Championship qualifying scores.  She won the 11-dive, 1-meter competition with 433.65 points and took the 6-dive, 3-meter event with 280.05 points.  Junior Natalya Dahlke also set a NCAA qualifying score of 396.53 points in the 1-meter to finish second.  Ali Lange was second in the 3-meter with 258.45 points while Dahlke took third with 258.45.

The Mavericks scored the maximum 32 team points in those two diving events and also maxed out in five other swimming events posting 1-2-3 sweeps in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events after beginning the day with a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard medley relay.

Meanwhile, White won both breaststroke events taking the 100 in 1:07.20 as part of another 1-2-3 sweep while before coming back to win the 200 by more than seven seconds in 2:24.46.  Danielson posted the quickest time in the 100 fly at 1:00.48, the first of the three events the Mavericks would exhibition all their swimmers to prevent an even more lopsided team score.

In the opening event, Lauren White, Bryant, Rosen and Bret Congdon won the 200 medley relay in 1:48.21 edging the Mavericks' "B" squad of Sarah Fillerup, Samantha White, Danielson and Natalie Saul, which finished in 1:48.45.

Naze then posted her first individual win dominating the 1,650 free in 18:13.09 while freshman Emily Abernathy touched second for the Mavs in 18:54.28.

Logan Anderson, Kennedy Bright and Ruby Bottai then went 1-2-3 in the 200 free with Anderson taking the win in 1:59.11.  Bright also broke two minutes at 1:59.98 while Bottai finished in 2:01.39.

Davy Brown (57.98) and Lauren White (58.70), both freshman, then finished second and third in the 100 back as WCU picked up their only true win of the day from Savannah Tice in 57.65 seconds.

The Mavericks then got back to winning ways in the 100 breast as Samantha White edged freshman teammate Sydney Dolloff-Holt by 0.43 seconds.  Freshman Emily Moreland was third in 1:10.18.

In the 200 fly, Isabelle Hansson claimed victory with a time of 2:12.99 while Bella Walters took second in 2:15.05.

Bottai then sprinted to the 50 free win in 25.10 seconds ahead of Abbey Desmet (25.31) and Ellyse Russell (25.71).  Grace Payton also had an exhibition time of 25.40 in the opening heat of that event.

After the first of two intermissions, Congdon then took the win in the 100 free at 54.44 while Saul (54.83) and Desmet (55.85) completed the 1-2-3 sweep.  Lauren White then won the 200 back in 2:05.50 while Fillerup touched second in 2:06.66.

White then won the 200 breast in 2:24.46 while Olivia DeRemer was second in 2:31.72.  Naze then won the 500 free in 5:20.28, 5.3 seconds faster than Maddie Pressler (5:25.58).

The Mavericks then had the fastest five times in the 100 fly with Danielson, Walters (1:00.87) and Hansson (1:00.91) leading the way.  WCU's Rylee Denney was the official winner in 1:04.72.

In the 200 IM, the Mavericks had eight swimmers post faster times than official winner Shea Yuran, who touched in 2:23.01 for the Mountaineers.  Brown touched first for CMU in 2:09.24 while Bright (2:12.33) and Payton (2:14.74) were the next two finishers.

The Mavericks also had the three fastest teams in the meet-ending 400 free relay.  The Mavs "B" team of Congdon, Bright, Alexa Warner and Saul, pulled a mild upset in 3:41.48 as the "A" squad of Anderson, Bottai, Brown and Pressler finished in 3:42.12.  WCU's team of Tice, Arden Tesch, Hadley Nelson and Addi O'Donnell were the official winners in 3:47.51.

Undefeated by RMAC foes in each of the last four dual meet seasons, the Mavericks will now turn their attention to the defense of their 2019 RMAC Championship title.  CMU will host eight other squads, including the Mountaineers, from Feb. 12-15 in what will be the first RMAC Championship at the El Pomar Natatorium since 2017.
