KINGSVILLE, Texas— Colorado Mesa University's
Ethan Harris broke his own school-record on three separate occasions in a matter of minutes and won the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championship in the men's high jump on Saturday evening here at Javelina Stadium. The redshirt freshman out of Victorville, California ended up with a school-record smashing clearance of 2.20 meters (7 feet, 2 ½ inches) to win the title on the second tie-breaker, capping an undefeated outdoor season.
In the process, he became the first Maverick to ever win an outdoor track & field title and the third overall track & field champion, joining senior teammates
Nolan Ellis (pole vault) and
Spencer Jahr (heptathlon), who won 2018 indoor titles in their respective events.
He is also the fifth Maverick in any sport to win an NCAA Division II crown, an elite club that also includes wrester James Martinez (2015, 157 pounds) and 4-time diving champion Ammar Hassan (2018, 2019; 1 & 3-meter).
Meanwhile,
Brooklynn York also earned all-America honors with a seventh place finish and official school-record time of 11.73 seconds in the 100 meters to lead the Maverick women.
In the high jump, Harris was clean on his opening three attempts at 1.99, 2.04 and 2.08 meters before getting over the bar at 2.11 meters (6-11) on this second attempt. He then broke his own outdoor school record by clearing 2.14 meters (7-0.25) on his first attempt and then made it over 2.17 meters (7-1.5) minutes later.
Meanwhile, eventual runner-up Kevin Schultz of Northwest Missouri State missed on his opening attempt at 2.17 to give Harris the advantage by virtue of total misses. Schultz then strategically passed before Harris cleared the eventual winning height on his opening attempt.
Schultz would also get over the bar on his first attempt while third-place Tyler Arroyo of Chico State needed two attempts, which dropped him below Harris and Schultz in the tie-breaking procedures. All three men then failed on all their attempts at 2.23 meters (7-3.75) as Harris was declared the winner.
He was tied for 11
th out of the 19 men in the field based on the pre-meet seeding with his school-record mark of 2.12 meters (6-11.5) and won all eight meets in which he competed this outdoor season.
Schultz (2.20) and Arroyo (2.19) were the top two seeds coming in and are both seniors.
Harris is now a 2-time all-American this year after finishing sixth at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in March.
Scoring ten team points for the effort, the Maverick men finished tied for 28th in the final team standings, equal to 2018 for their highest ever outdoor finish.
On the women's side, the Mavericks finished tied for 62nd thanks to York's 2-point effort, which lowered the official school-record in the 100 meters by a single one-hundreth of a second. York had run a quicker time of 11.51 seconds in Thursday's preliminary heats, but that effort was with a 2.3-meter-per-second tailwind, a bit over the allowable record-setting limit of 2.0.
Saturday's final was run with a wind reading of +1.8, which allowed the redshirt sophomore out of Denver to break the school-record of 11.74, which had been held since 2014 by
Whitney Rowe, the last CMU women to earn all-America honors in outdoor track & field.
The Mavericks also had two other athletes compete on Saturday.
Freshman
Roth Morgan, making his national championship debut, finished 15
th in the javelin throw with a heave of 57.81 meters (189-8), which came on the last of his three attempts in Flight No. 1. He had fouled on his first attempt and recorded a toss of 56.05 meters (183-10) on his second.
Senior
Gabriella Casey, competing at her second overall and first career outdoor national championship, failed to clear a height in the women's pole vault. She had finished in a tie for 12
th at the 2018 indoor championships to earn Second Team USTFCCCA All-America honors.
