GOLDEN, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University freshman
Asa Keim finished third and scored 6,048 points in his first career decathlon while Maverick sophomore
Kaitlyn Pearson took fifth in the women's heptathlon with 4,241 points as the Maverick mutli duo wrapped up competition at the Mines Midweek & Multi meet on Thursday here at the Colorado School of Mines.
Keim's total, fueled by four collegiate best marks over the last two days, also puts him seven on the Mavericks' all-time performers list and easily qualifies him for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships. He ranks third on the RMAC's performance list, which was made entirely up of 11 RMAC athletes who were in this week's field.
Meanwhile, Pearson also secured her spot with what is currently the fourth best heptathlon mark in the RMAC this season.
Keim fared best out of the 14 decathletes in the pole vault, which was moved inside to Mines' Steinhauer Fieldhouse after two earlier lightning delays. He also had a strong second place mark of 45.97 meters (150-10) in the javelin throw after faring third best in the discus throw with a mark of 38.24 meters (125-5). He book-ended his day with marks of 16.95 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and a time of 5:18.55 in his first 1,500-meter run of his collegiate career.
Keim had scored 3,1010 points in the first five events on Wednesday, setting new bests of 12.19 seconds and 53.61 seconds in the 100 and 400-meter dashes while clearing 1.84 meters (6-0.5) in the high jump.
He then steadily moved up the standings on Thursday, recording 2,947 points in the final five.
Pearson was fifth out of the field of 15 and set a career-best high jump clearance of 1.51 meters (4-11.5) on Wednesday before faring fourth best in the meet-closing 800 meters on Thursday with a time of 2:35.24.
A separate contingent of Maverick track & field athletes will return here on Saturday for the Kit Mayer Classic. The start time of that meet has been moved up to 8 a.m. |
