Jacobi hits two homers, Wedman shines in doubleheader sweep

CMU extends winning streak to 22 with 3-1, 9-1 wins over UCCS

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Senior Kaila Jacobi homered in both games while freshman Lauren Wedman drove in four key runs to lead the No. 12 Colorado Mesa University Maverick Softball team to their 21st and 22nd consecutive wins over the visiting UCCS Mountain Lions on Friday afternoon here at the CMU Softball Stadium.

Wedman hit the game-winning 2-run triple in the bottom of the sixth to lift the Mavericks to a 3-1 win in the first before scoring the game-sealing run on a Alexandria Dufour walk-off RBI single as the Mavs took the second game, 9-1 in five innings via the mercy-rule.

The Mavericks also got two more solid pitching efforts from Kimbri Herring and McKenzie Surface and improved to 36-6 overall and to 30-3 in RMAC play with their 15th and 16th consecutive home victories.

In the process, they took two more steps towards what would be a 12th RMAC title, maintaining a 4 ½-game lead over Colorado Christian (31-12, 24-6 RMAC), which won both games of a Friday doubleheader at Black Hills State.

Both teams have six regular season games remaining, including two head-to-head meetings next Friday and Saturday in Lakewood.

UCCS, which is sixth in the RMAC standings, slipped to just below .500 overall with a 22-23 record. The Mountain Lions are now 18-15 in conference play.

Game 1

Neither team would score in the first three innings before Jacobi took the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth over the left field fence to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.

UCCS would answer back in the sixth as Alex Cook hit a 1-out double before moving to third on a Payton Reisman single.  Cook then scored on a RBI single by Mountain Lion pitcher/designated player Taylor Reidhead, who went 2-for-3 to lead the visitors' attack.

However, Wedman and the Mavericks came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth as Jacobi started the rally with a 1-out double.  She was lifted for a pinch-runner in the form of Nicole Christensen before pinch-hitter Jordyn Hays drew four straight balls to trot down to first base.

After a flyout, Wedman then hit the first pitch from Reidhead to the fence in right centerfield while motoring to third for her first career triple, which scored the go-ahead runs.

Herring, who spread six hits and a walk in a solid complete game win, then shut the door on the Mountain Lions with three quick outs while improving to 17-3.

The Mavericks also finished with six hits, all of which were for extra bases.  Jacobi registered two.

Reidhead fell to 9-10 with the loss.

Game 2

The Mavericks wasted no time in getting on the board as they scored four runs in each of the first two innings to open up commanding 4-0 and 8-1 leads.

In the first, AnnMarie Torres hit a RBI double to plate lead-off hitter Brooke Doumer, who had walked, to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.  Jacobi then blasted a 2-run home run off the foul pole on the left field line to extend the lead to 3-0.

After a lineout, Wedman then singled up the middle before stealing second and scoring on a Sarah Staudle single.

The Mavericks then benefited from a key error in the bottom of the second scoring four unearned runs after UCCS had plated an unearned run of their own in the top of the second.

The first inning of the rally came off the error before Hays hit a RBI double to score Torres.

Wedman then delivered a 2-run single to right as Hays and Jacobi both came across.

Meanwhile, Surface was in control allowing just three hits and the single unearned run while striking out four.  She retired her final six opponents and improved to 17-0 as the Mavericks plated the game-clinching run in the bottom of the fifth when Wedman drew a lead-off walk before stealing second.

The Mountain Lions would get two outs but could not get a third as Dufour sent a hit through the right side to score Wedman from second base.

The Mavericks finished the game with nine hits as Torres and Dufour both went 2-for-3 while Wedman went 2-for-2 with a walk in the game and 3-for-5 on the day.

Cami Duffey suffered the loss for the Mountain Lions as she fell to 6-6 after giving up seven hits and four earned runs in two innings before giving way to Braelyne Crenshaw for the third, fourth and fifth innings.

Up Next

The two teams will play another doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.  The twin-bill will be CMU's final home games of the regular season.  The Mavericks will honor their eight seniors prior to the first game and could potentially clinch the RMAC title with two wins and a Colorado Christian loss or a single win combined with two Cougar defeats.
