FRESNO, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University Women's Tennis team came up on the short end of a 4-3 heart-breaking decision in neutral-court action against Holy Names University on Sunday here at the Haak Tennis Complex on the campus of Fresno Pacific University.
The Mavericks lost the doubles point in a tie-breaker at No. 2 doubles and came up short in two of the four 3-set singles matches as they fell to 3-11 overall with their ninth loss of the spring.
The Hawks improved to 6-4.
The Mavericks received a 6-2 No. 3 doubles win from
Taylor Hershey and
Rebecca Osterberg but were unable to claim the point as the Hawks won the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches, the latter of which by a 10-8 margin in the tiebreaker.
The Mavs would quickly even the score at 1-1 as
Georgia Hansen won her No. 4 singles match by retirement as Symone Jacques, who had partnered with Lada Baglaeva for the No. 2 doubles win, suffered an injury.
However, Holy Names went back ahead with a 6-2, 6-0 win by Dominique Ernst over Osterberg at No. 3 singles before the other four singles matches all went to three full sets.
CMU came out on top at No. 1 and No. 6 as
Kristen Kirby defeated Baglaeva, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 in the top flight while Waldburger defeated Rutendo Gwaze, 6-3, 0-6, 7-5.
However, the Hawks won at No. 2 singles with Jahan Bayramova defeating
Emily Beckley, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 before Macy Barajas clinched the dual with a No. 5 singles win over Hershey (4-6, 7-5, 6-4).
